The T app, which is becoming increasingly popular among women in America, became the victim of a major cyber attack. The privacy of millions of women is at stake in this data breach. The company has confirmed that more than 72,000 photos, including photos of documents like selfies and government IDs, have been leaked online.
What is T App?
This app was launched in 2023 and was promoted as a safe network for women. Here, women can share dating experiences, can put red flags or green flags about men, and can even do background checks. The app describes itself as the safest place for women and recently became the most downloaded free app in the US.
How was the data leaked?
According to reports, this database first appeared on online platforms like Char Chan. From there, the leaked photos and documents spread rapidly first to Twitter and then to other sites.
About 13,000 photos were those that were submitted during verification on the app.
The remaining 59,000 photo posts were related to direct messages and comments.
The leaked data was said to be related to users who registered before February 2024.
Threat to women's safety
After the data leak, some unknown users even created maps using the location metadata of these photos. In which the areas where women lived were shown. Even though there were no names and addresses, this posed a serious threat to the privacy and safety of many women. According to a BBC report, many women are now afraid that their stalkers or old stalkers can use this information.
What did the company say?
In a statement issued by T App, it was said that we are strengthening the security of our platform and taking the help of third-party cyber security experts. The affected users will be notified and they will also be given identity theft protection and credit monitoring service. Apart from this, the company claims that only 2-year-old data has been leaked, which was earlier stored at the behest of law enforcement agencies to prevent cyber bullying.
How to know if your data has been leaked or not?
To know whether your data has been leaked or not, the company will send direct email or notification to the people whose data has been leaked.
Apart from this, according to the company, only those people have been affected who created an account before February 2024.
T App has said that it will also provide facilities like identity theft protection and credit monitoring to the affected people.
Why did the attack on the app increase?
Experts say that as this app became popular, resentment also increased among some online groups and men. On platforms like 4Chan, there were talks of open hack and leak campaigns against this app. It is believed that this attack is the result of that.
