Pakistani authorities on Friday closed major roads leading to the capital Islamabad and suspended mobile internet services to prevent a protest march by the hardline religious group Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), officials and media reports said.
According to Dawn, a directive dated October 9 and addressed to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) chairman stated that the ministry had “accorded approval to suspend 3G/4G services in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, starting from 12am tonight till further orders.”
U.S. Embassy Islamabad and the U.S. Consulates General in Lahore, Karachi, and Peshawar are monitoring "planned protest activity." The embassy has advised U.S. citizens to avoid large gatherings and remain aware of their surroundings. "Protests can be fluid in nature and even peaceful ones can turn violent."
