Rs 19 lakh to rent a flat? Canadian in Bengaluru shocked by deposit demand, says he'd rather buy Thar; Netizens react with jokes and advice

A Canadian citizen living in India has sparked a fun and furious online debate after posting about the sky-high rental deposit demanded for a flat in Bengaluru.

Caleb Friesen took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share a listing for a 3BHK flat in Diamond District, Domlur, and it’s not the rent that stunned people, it was the Rs 19.25 lakh deposit.

The monthly rent was already a hefty Rs 1.75 lakh, but the security deposit left people gobsmacked. Caleb wrote:

“Rs 19 lakh for security deposit! Absolutely bonkers what landlords are expecting these days. I could literally buy a new Mahindra Thar for less than this deposit. Anyone know of a place in/around Indiranagar with 2–3 months deposit only? Rent price range Rs 80,000 to 1 lakh.”

X users react: Jokes, advice, and real estate realities

The post went viral, quickly gaining over 18,000 views and opening the floodgates to all kinds of responses.

One user joked, “Don’t buy a Thar. That’s for special folks only,” while another wrote, “Negotiable rent and non-negotiable deposit! Classic Bengaluru.”

Some came forward with solutions too. A fellow resident offered, “Looking for a flatmate in my 2BHK, no deposit needed, just feature our startup in your videos.”

Another person made a serious point: “You could buy a flat in Kolkata for that much!” To which Caleb replied, “Lol, yeah same in Aizawl where I’m currently living. Crazy.”

Practical suggestions pour in

While some poked fun, others were more practical. One user advised Caleb to try Mahadevapura, a nearby area known for more reasonable rents. Another chimed in, “Better to meet local brokers, online searches don’t always show the real options.”

A common theme was disbelief. “Damn! That’s too huge,” one user wrote, summing up the general mood.
