Importance of Ganpati Visarjan
The importance of Ganesh Visarjan has been explained in depth in both scriptures and tradition. The idol of Ganeshji is made of clay, and eventually goes into water and dissolves into the five elements. It reminds us of the nature of the soul and its union with the Supreme Being. According to astrology, the completion of every auspicious work is as important as the beginning; otherwise, the planetary power may remain incomplete. Visarjan is not just a physical act, it is a thanksgiving to God and an invitation to come again – Ganpati Bappa Moraya, next year you come soon.
Why is Ganpati Visarjan done?
Ganpati Visarjan is mentioned in Hindu religious texts. When we install the idol of Ganpati in homes or pandals, it is called Aawahan, i.e., inviting God. After worship and prayers, when the works are successful by his grace and the devotees get the desired result, then it is in accordance with the scriptures to bid farewell to the deity respectfully. This farewell process takes place in the form of immersion in water. This process also makes one realize the impermanence of life, that whatever has come, one day it has to go.
The story of Ganpati Visarjan
According to a mythological story, Lord Ganesha composed the Mahabharata book. It is said that Maharishi Ved Vyasji narrated the story of the Mahabharata to Ganeshji for 10 consecutive days. Ganeshji wrote the Mahabharata story after listening to it for 10 days. 10 days later, when the Mahabharata story was written, Maharishi Ved Vyasji touched Ganeshji, his body was burning like fire. Ved Vyasji immediately took Ganeshji to a nearby pond and cooled his temperature. It is believed that Ganeshji gets coolness by immersion, and from then the practice of Ganesh Visarjan started.
