Kolkata: Soon after the virtual meeting of Trinamool Congress (TMC) Supremo Mamata Banerjee along with her party MPs of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, TMC Serampore MP Kalyan Banerjee expressing his ‘displeasure’ had resigned from the post of Chief Whip of TMC in Lok Sabha.
Talking to the media, initially, Kalyan said that despite working hard the party Supremo had indirectly expressed her displeasure on him for which he had resigned.
“Mamata Banerjee said that she has no problem with the Rajya Sabha but she said that there is a communication problem in the Lok Sabha. She even mentioned that instead of countering Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on various current issues some MPs are fighting amongst themselves. The blame was directly on me. Mamata didi even asked MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar to look after communication issues. So, I had resigned. How can I look after everything? Sudip Bandhopadhyay is not well so he is not coming. Kakoli at times comes but is absent sometimes as well,” said Kalyan Banerjee.

“I have informed my party everything but despite that no action against her is taken. I have even said Kakoli since she is the deputy leader in the House to put my seat at the last bench. Half of the MPs don't come to the House. Despite that, the party doesn’t take any action. I also fight state cases at the Supreme Court and despite that I have to come to the Parliament regularly. Since I work the most, I have to face backlashes. However, I have no complaints,” further mentioned TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee.
In a twist to the tale, Kalyan mentioned that he will take the final call after August 7 as TMC National secretary Abhishek Banerjee will hold a meeting with him.
“Abhishek had called me and said he would reach the national capital on August 7 and also wanted to hold a meeting with me. I will discuss everything with him and then take the final call. Party is giving importance to Mahua only because she is good looking and speaks English. Abhishek had requested me to carry out the responsibility of chief whip till then,” claimed the TMC Serampore MP.
Meanwhile, on the other hand, it was decided that party’s national secretary Abhishek Banerjee will replace veteran politician and Kolkata (North) MP Sudip Bandhopadhyay as leader of the party in Lok Sabha.
According to party sources, after Mamata proposed the name of Abhishek collectively the decision was accepted by all the MPs.
According to poll analysts, ahead of the 2026 state Assembly elections, the party Supremo wants to give more emphasis to Abhishek ‘nationally’.
