Shubman Gill did what other Indian captains in the past were unable to do, which is winning a Test match at Edgbaston. The new Test skipper emphatically did that by handing England a drubbing by 363 runs. The win also saw India level the five-match Test series at 1-1.
Shubman Gill's inspiring dressing room speech
Following the victory, BCCI released a video of Shubman Gill delivering an inspiring speech inside Team India's dressing room. Speaking in front of other members of the team, he said, "We have worked very hard to be in this position. Over the past six to eight months, i know how hard it was to be able to get a test win, especially to do it here where we haven't won a test match ever."

"I just want to say I am very proud of you, of everyone, because I think on Day one we mentioned that it's gonna take each and every one of us to be able to win a test match, especially in this country, and everyone contributed. But the most special thing for me in this Test match was Siraj's catch at end of the day."

At 25, Gill became the fourth-youngest Indian captain to win a Test match. He broke Virat Kohli’s record (293) for most runs by an Indian captain in a Test, scoring 430 runs. He also surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s record (344) for the highest match aggregate by an Indian in a Test.
Gill became the second Indian to score a double century and a century in the same Test, after Sunil Gavaskar. However, he is the first player in Test history to score both a 250 and a 150 in a single match.
India registered its first-ever Test win at Edgbaston and also achieved its biggest away win by runs, defeating England by 336 runs. England suffered its second-heaviest Test defeat by runs against India, behind the 434-run loss in Rajkot in 2024.
