OpenAI has rolled out GPT-5, the latest version of its large language model GPT for users of ChatGPT as well as enterprises leveraging its APIs for artificial intelligence (AI) products.
The company said, “GPT‑5 is available to all users, with Plus subscribers getting more usage, and Pro subscribers getting access to GPT‑5 pro, a version with extended reasoning for even more comprehensive and accurate answers.”
Speaking to the media, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claimed that the new model brings enhanced features across coding, math, writing, health, visual perception, and others to India among other countries.
According to an ET report, Altman said the company is working on launching more products for India with a focus on affordability as a USP. OpenAI will work with local partners to make AI work for Indian use cases, and make it “more affordable for people across the country”, Altman was quoted as saying.
The AI giant mentioned that it is also launching a research preview of four pre-set personalities, which lets the user understand how ChatGPT interacts, without writing custom prompts. The four initial options, Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd, are opt-in, adjustable anytime in your Customize ChatGPT settings, and designed to match your communication style.
In terms of factual accuracy, OpenAI mentioned that GPT‑5’s responses are about 45% less likely to contain a factual error than GPT‑4, and about 80% less likely, when compared with OpenAI o3.
On the coding front, the company claimed that GPT‑5 shows improvements in complex front‑end generation and debugging larger repositories, where it creates responsive websites, apps, and games with an eye for aesthetic sensibility in just one prompt.
When it comes to agentic AI, a big focus for companies across sectors, GPT‑5 has sharpened the test instruction following and agentic tool use, where it has improved in handling complex and evolving tasks.
With the growing number of chatbots emerging in the market, the AI giants are evidently challenged with introducing unique features and frequent upgrades to remain users’ favourite in the market.
Just a day before, Elon Musk revealed that his AI startup xAI will open source its chatbot Grok 2 in the following week.
OpenAI’s India FocusAside from competing on a global scale, OpenAI has also been eyeing to crack its space in the most populous country in the world. India has more than 886 Mn internet users spread across the country, which is projected to grow by 35% to reach above 1.2 Bn by 2030, according to a recent Inc42 report.
While Indian companies are busy focussing on shaping AI models more diverse in languages for the rural-centric audience to adapt with the digital development, global giants such as OpenAI are fixed at offering their AI tools to simplify users’ daily tasks to the existing internet users.
Earlier this year, the GenAI giant rolled out its AI agent “Operator” in multiple countries, including India, which can perform several tasks for the user. The company claims the AI agent can handle repetitive tasks like filling out forms, ordering groceries, among others.
Months following that, OpenAI also launched data residency in India, Japan and South Korea, enabling these regions to store data locally, in May.
