Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder Shibu Soren's political journey was spectacular. He became the Chief Minister of the state thrice, while he was also a Lok Sabha MP several times. He also became the Coal Minister at the Centre thrice. Currently, he was a Rajya Sabha MP. His son Hemant Soren is currently the Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren passed away on Monday morning. He was ill for a long time. He breathed his last at Sir Gangaram Hospital in Delhi. Expressing grief over his demise, Jharkhand Chief Minister and his son Hemant Soren said that Guruji has left us all. PM Modi also condoled his demise.
Former Chief Minister Shibu Soren died today at 8:48 am. He was admitted in the Nephrology Department at Gangaram Hospital. He had kidney related problems. Apart from this, there were some other problems in the body. He was 81 years old. 3 days of state mourning has been declared in Jharkhand from August 4 to August 6. All government offices in Jharkhand will remain closed for 2 days on August 4 and 5.
PM Modi expressed grief over the demise
Ganga Ram Hospital issued its statement on the death and said, "With great sadness we inform about the death of former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Shibu Soren. He was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi since 19 June 2025. He was being treated under the supervision of Dr. AK Bhalla, Senior Consultant, Nephrology. However, despite the continuous efforts of our team, he passed away today. We express our heartfelt condolences to his family, his loved ones and the people of Jharkhand in this hour of grief and have lost a very popular public leader."
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren passed away today. He was the Chief Minister of Jharkhand thriceShibu Soren, who was a leader in the movement to create Jharkhand state, was called Guruji by his fans. He was the Chief Minister of the state thrice. However, he could not complete his term even once. He became the third Chief Minister (2005) of Jharkhand, which was carved out of Bihar. During his first term in 2005, he could remain Chief Minister for just 10 days, then during his second term in 2008, he could remain Chief Minister for about a year and during his third term, he could remain Chief Minister for just a few months.
Apart from being the Chief Minister, Shibu Soren was also successful in central politics. He was elected MP for the first time in 1980. He tried his luck for the first time in the 1977 Lok Sabha elections but lost from the Dumka seat. He lost the election to Bateshwar Hembram of Bharatiya Lok Dal.
He became coal minister thrice at the centreHowever, he was elected MP in the 1980 elections. He became MP from Dumka for the first time. After this, he won consecutively in the years 1986, 1989, 1991 and 1996. However, in the 1998 elections, he had to face defeat from the then state president of BJP, Babulal Marandi. In the 1999 elections, he fielded his wife but she also lost. After this, he also won from Dumka seat in 2004, 2009 and 2014.
In total, he was a Lok Sabha MP 8 times. Apart from this, Shibu also became a minister in the governments of Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh at the Centre. At this time, he was a Rajya Sabha MP. He was the Coal Minister at the Centre thrice (2004, 2004 to 2005 and 2006).
