Andre Onana reveals what left him stunned during Man Utd exit as he completes transfer

Andre Onana was left stunned by the rapturous reception that he received in Turkey ahead of joining Trabzonspor. Onana, 29, completed his loan move from Manchester United on Thursday and will spend the 2025-26 season in the Turkish Super Lig.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper was made surplus to requirements by United boss Ruben Amorim, who dropped him at the start of the Premier League campaign in favour of Altay Bayindir. Following Bayindir's shoddy start to the season and Onana's error-filled appearance in their humiliating Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, United signed another goalkeeper, Senne Lammens.

Lammens' arrival, for an initial £18.2million plus £3.5m in potential add-ons, pushed Onana further down the pecking order and he was unlikely to even make the bench for league games under Amorim. In search of regular game-time ahead of the 2026 World Cup, Onana decided to leave Old Trafford and sign for Trabzonspor ahead of the Turkish transfer window closing on Friday.

The 29-year-old landed at Trabzon Airport alongside his wife, Melanie, and was immediately mobbed by supporters, putting a smile back on his face after making another error during Cameroon's 1-0 loss against Cape Verde on Tuesday. "I am very happy. I can say that I am very happy," Onana told local outlet 61 Saat.

"I am starting a new project, a new adventure for me, I am very happy to be here. This is a feeling that makes me so happy. I've never felt so much love from people around me.

"It's a wonderful feeling to be made to feel at home from the very first moment. I want to start working as soon as possible and reciprocate that love by making them happy on the field."

The loan, which doesn't include an option to buy, will see Trabzonspor cover his £120,000-a-week wages in full. Onana could make his debut as soon as Sunday, as his new team travel to Istanbul to face Fenerbahce.

"I'm always ready. Every player wants to play and take part in these kinds of matches," the Cameroon international added. "Of course, we'll be playing against an important and strong opponent. But we're also aware of our strength."

Onana spent two seasons with the Red Devils after joining from Inter Milan in July 2023. United forked out £47.2m to sign the former Ajax star, who was fresh off helping Inter reach the Champions League final.

His first season was littered with errors and he did little to boost his reputation in his second term. Onana will wear his favoured No.24 shirt at Trabzonspor, who are currently second in the league table, having collected 10 points from four games.
