'Compelling' ITV medical drama starring James Nesbitt is coming to Netflix after 13 years

Netflix subscribers have a host of exciting new shows to look forward to watching this September - from the second part of Wednesday season two to the upcoming Charlie Sheen documentary. However, viewers can also expect a few forgotten British dramas to land on the streamer.

Among the shows that are being given a new life on Netflix is ITV medical drama Monroe - which is returning to our screens after 13 years. The series stars Cold Feet's James Nesbitt as neurosurgeon Gabriel Monroe, described as a "flawed genius who never lets anyone forget about his flaws or his genius".

Monroe follows Gabriel and his team as they tackle life-and-death situations, with ITV teasing that we'll see the group become "in an intense few days, a reluctant dysfunctional family united by hopes, fears and grief". It comes after award-winning BBC drama with Sheridan Smith coming to Netflix after 15 years.

Monroe is set to hit Netflix in the UK on 7 September along with Paramount+ drama The Killing Kind. The series also stars W1A's Sarah Parish as Miss Jenny Bremner - a cardiothoracic surgeon who is in a relationship with anaesthetist Dr Lawrence Shepherd (played by The Nevers' Tom Riley).

The cast also features Waterloo Road's Neil Pearson, Holby City's Manjinder Virk, Van Der Valk's Luke Allen-Gale and Line of Duty's Christina Chong. Throughout the show, we see the likes of Outlander's Andrew Gower, EastEnders' Tracy-Ann Oberman and Bloodlands' Susan Lynch join the cast as well.

The medical drama ran on ITV from March 2011 until November the following year, airing for two series. However, it was cancelled by the broadcaster after just two series due to low viewing figures.

Despite the low ratings, many fans have taken to social media to praise the series. "Brilliant television!! The actors had me completely involved with each character in this series. Excellent story telling in each and every episode," one viewer wrote.

Another said: "Just found this show on Amazon Prime, Love it! What a shame it only had 2 seasons. So well done, well-acted, well written. James Nesbitt, what a great actor, and so funny. Sara Parish, amazing. All the cast was in sync, all great. British humor and British wit, what to say, top notch!"
