Coronation Street's Debbie Webster discovers horrifying family truth amid dementia battle

Send Push

Coronation Street's Debbie Webster was dealt with a shocking family truth during Friday's episode of the ITV soap. The hotel owner, who was diagnosed with vascular dementia earlier this year, was visibly shocked as she started to put two and two together to realise a bombshell.

Fans of the long-running show will know that earlier in the week, Abi Webster (Sally Carman) split up with her husband Kevin (Michael Le Vell) after four years of marriage, but did not disclose that's because she's having an affair with his brother Carl (Jonathan Howard). Kevin was very suspicious to begin with, and initially shared his concerns with sister Debbie (Sue Devaney), but she refused to believe him.

However in the latest instalment of the world's longest-running TV soap, Abi and Carl continued their tryst in the room Debbie has given her brother at the hotel. The pair had decided to keep their relationship a secret from Kevin for now as he came to terms with the breakup.

Abi and Carl had been in bed together, and afterwards, once they were both dressed, Abi went to use the bathroom. It was at this moment that Debbie burst into the room, all to casually ask Carl for a favour. She had hoped Carl to pop over to see Kevin since he was in such a 'bad way' following the split, when Abi suddenly emerged.

When Debbie asked what was going on, Abi spluttered: "I've come to give him his wages," but in typical Debbie style, she shot back: "Oh! How very quaint. Still pay in cash, do you? No one told you that everything is digital these days?"

Carl fumbled an excuse about working extra hours at the garage before Abi hurried out. Debbie asked Carl for the truth as she spat: "She's racing off like her backside's on fire! Have you two...?" Debbie asked Carl for the truth and when he denied it, she said: "I don't even want to go there, but if you've betrayed our Kevin like that, your own brother! Nope, it doesn't even bear thinking about."

Carl, putting on his usual act, said: "Debbie, there is nothing going on, I swear. Kevin's already accused me, now you are! Can't believe you both think so little of me." Debbie folded her arms, clearly not convinced.

Carl, who was brought up in Germany and only arrived in Weatherfield earlier this year, denied everything to Kevin, who recently came through a battle with testicular cancer, earlier this week.

He said: "You think I'd do your wife while you're fighting cancer?! Coming back to this family, as bonkers and as broken as it is, well, for the first time I had people looking out for me. Watching my back. You think I'd risk that? That I'd even think about betraying my own flesh and blood?"

Later on, Debbie was providing Kevin with a shoulder to cry on as she poured him a drink at number 13. He told her in no uncertain times: "Her and Carl. They're having an affair," but Debbie laughed at the thought. She said: "I'm sorry, I don't believe it. Yeah, they get on."

But Kevin replied: "I've seen it with my own eyes. I caught them both, flirting on CCTV. I know what I saw!" Debbie tried to reason with him but Kevin was convinced he knew the truth. He said: "The minute he showed up on the street, she's been different. If she's left me for him, I swear, I'll kill the pair of them."

Of course, Debbie is not the first to discover Carl and Abi's affair, as the pair were previously rumbled by Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford), and she has been blackmailing them over the whole situation for weeks after she started up a brief dalliance with Carl herself. Viewers will also know that Carl has been seeing James Bailey (Jason Callender), but with Abi expecting herself and Carl to start a new life together, the whole mess could easily end in heartbreak for everyone.
