Educating Yorkshire fans emotional as troubled student turns things around 'gives you hope'

The third episode of Educating Yorkshire season 2 aired on Channel 4 tonight and emotions were running high at Thornhill Community Academy.

The ground-breaking documentary show returned this year 12 years after its first season aired, with the Dewsbury secondary school once again opening its doors to the British public.

Previous episodes have spotlighted challenges faced by individual students and teachers and this week was no different. Episode 3 focuses on year 10 sports star Scott, whose behaviour puts his international rugby dreams at risk.

Things turn tense for the student, as Mr Burton threatens to call the head coach if his attitude doesn’t improve

However, later on in the episode, it is revealed the Scott is struggling with things at home, with viewers rooting for the aspiring sports player to turn things around.

In the end, it is good news, as Scott receives confirmation that he has achieved his dream of being accepted into the rugby academy.

Taking to X, viewers were delighted for Scott as one wrote: "Yayyyyy. Scott got accepted into the rugby academy."

"Great episode. Looking forward to seeing Scott playing at Twickenham in the future," a second enthused.

"Well done Scott, keep at it lad," a third commented, as another added: "Really chuffed for Scott!"

"Well done Scott!" others applauded, while another cautioned: "Let’s hope Scott realises what an opportunity/ lifeline this is."

One more person simply tweeted: "#EducatingYorkshire is a wonderful, wonderful #television programme. It fills you with hope #Channel4."

Elsewhere in the episode, we are also introduced to fellow year 10 pupil Alexa, who is a model student putting herself under a lot of pressure, with anxiety threatening to overwhelm her.

Alexa faces further issues when she falls out with a friend and risks dropping down a set following a low test score, but ultimately decides to pick herself up and even enter the runnning for Head Girl in an inspiring twist.

Channel 4 have returned to Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, after more than a decade.

The synopsis for season 1 reads: “Filmed at Thornhill Community Academy near Dewsbury, Educating Yorkshire captures every detail of life in the school, from playground hijinks and inspirational lessons to life-changing events.”

Millions tuned in to watch the original series when it first aired, with teacher Mr Burton quickly becoming a fan favourite thanks to his positive outlook and dedication to his students.

One of the most moving stories to come out of Educating Yorkshire was when he helped pupil Musharaf Asghar overcome his stammer.

The inspirational scenes were captured in the documentary, with Musharaf eventually going on to stand up in front of his classmates and give a speech.

Now, Musharaf has gone on to become a professional motivational speaker, demonstrating the impact teachers can have on young lives across the country.

Educating Yorkshire airs Sunday nights at 8pm on Channel 4 and is also available to catch up on Channel4.com.
