Send Push

The UK Foreign Office has issued a new travel warning for a popular holiday destination. From today (September 10) Brits have been urged to “check” for any disruptionswhen travelling in France.

This is because the country is set to see a number of strikes and demonstrations over the next week, which could cause issues for tourists. In an update by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), it said: “Calls for strikes and demonstrations across France on Wednesday 10 September and Thursday 18 September could make disruption more likely.

“Monitor local news and check with your travel provider regarding potential delays.” The FCDO added that there can be “frequent industrial actionacross France”.

“This can lead to disruption and delays on roads and public transport,” it said. “If you’re due to travel to or within France, monitor the media, check your operator’s advice and follow the advice of the authorities.

“Check your operator’s advice before travelling, including where you are taking connecting flights.” On top of this, demonstrations, political gatherings, or marches can take place with “little or no warning”, particularly in cities.

It said: “Whilst most demonstrations are peaceful, if you’re near areas where they are taking place, you should remain aware of what is happening around you and follow the advice of the police and local authorities.” As part of its general travel advice for France, the FCDO warned that terrorists are “very likely” to try to carry out attacks in France.

On the Government website it explained that terrorism attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by tourists and foreign nationals such as:

  • Shopping centres
  • Entertainment establishments and nightlife venues
  • Sporting and cultural events
  • Public transport and national and international transport hubs
  • Places of worship
  • Crowded places and public gatherings

It said: “Methods of attack have included knife attacks, shootings, bombings and vehicle attacks. Be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local French authorities.”
