'I work at Tesco and there's one thing I hate doing for customers'

Working at a supermarket must be stressful, as there's so much to do in so little time, and Tesco is one particular store that gets super busy. From stacking shelves to serving customers and aiding with refunds, there is a lot that members of staff have to fit into a shift; however, according to one employee, there's one thing he doesn't want to do.

In a bold statement, the Tesco employee made a distinct difference between what's expected of him and what's expected of a manager. According to a post he published on Reddit, customers may be expecting a little too much of him.

He took to social media to ask for advice and share his own personal thoughts on customers' demands. Though he's happy to put in 100% effort during his scheduled hours, there is one task he hates to carry out.

In the post, the anonymous man wrote: "I do the closing shift on the self-service checkouts and I had two people get to the checkout three minutes before closing with a massive trolley. With two scan as you shop handsets for the same trolley, after a little bit of badgering as they were being quite awkward, I get the customer [to] tell me which is which and sort it out.

"He then gets the handset mixed up and I end up having to do full service checks. One of them ended up with 15 items missing because he moved a bag, and so I had to scan everything manually from that bag.

"I may have vocally exercised my displeasure at the customer and said, if he does this again, I’ll refuse service because I had every right to just walk off and then not get their shopping, as I’m not getting paid to finish their shop.

"Once my shift finishes, what rights do I have to just leave and make that the manager's problem and just walk off? What trouble can I get into, if any? It’s my understanding it’s the manager's job to make sure the shop is clear and everybody’s out before closing?"

The post attracted a lot of attention, and dozens of people commented after it was shared. Though it's clear he doesn't think he should have to stay after his shift finishes, he wanted to seek people's advice on the matter, as he doesn't want to get into trouble, despite his strong views.

One person replied, saying: "This is exactly why I make two announcements. If I leave around 12.05am for example, I make sure to take an extra five minutes break on my next shift because, after midnight, I’m not being paid at all.

"It’s ridiculous how some people have no respect for others’ time. It’s frustrating dealing with these type of idiots!"

To this, the employee replied: "It has happened before, but I’m usually quite understanding in certain circumstances beause we have all been there - the kid's poorly, you’ve run out of Calpol and you get to the shop a few minutes before it shuts.

"They must’ve been local because one of the items they bought was a lawnmower, and who goes out near to midnight to buy a lawnmower?"

Another wrote: "I used to send the security guard around telling people if they didn't get to the tills now they wouldn't be served at all."

A third replied: "I don't know about your store, but my store pays until 12.15am for this exact reason, and it also gives you time to do your closing jobs too. If it goes after this, I would definitely take it up with your shift lead or manager and make sure you get paid for the extra time."

Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "Don't do anything you aren't being paid for. They have no right to complain. You don't owe them favours or free time. Some of us have lives, plans, buses to catch, homes and families to get to. They'd do well to remember that."
