Man Utd receive new referee verdict after Casemiro red card vs Chelsea as ban set

Manchester United have been informed why the correct call was made to send off Casemiro during their weekend triumph over Chelsea.

The Red Devils secured a 2-1 win against the west London side in their Premier Leagueencounter at Old Trafford on Saturday night. Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro found the back of the net for United in a match that saw both sides finish with ten players.

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was shown a straight red inside the opening five minutes following a challenge on Bryan Mbeumo just outside the box. Casemiro was shown a red card in first-half stoppage times after collecting two yellows for challenges on Enzo Fernandezand Andrey Santos.

The decision to give Casemiro his second caution has sparked discussion after referee Peter Bankes gave the United midfielder his marching orders. Now, ex-Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has revealed why he thinks the right call was made

"There's no doubt about that, you are always going to get a yellow card for that [foul on Santos], and this is what the referee did well, he picked out the right ones and left the right ones alone as well," said Gallagher on Sky Sports' Ref Watch.

"The second one - people will say to me, 'Is it enough for a second yellow card?' I am forever saying not every tackle after a yellow card is a second yellow card, but the difference here is he has deliberately gone to pull him back.

"We see every week, we are saying 'Everybody who is pulled back gets a second yellow card'. People say, 'He [Casemiro] got the ball', he gets the ball because he pulls him [Santos] back. I think second yellow card, red card."

However, former Premier League striker Jay Bothroyd disagreed, arguing that Casemiro should not have been dismissed for his challenge on Santos. "I think that was harsh," Bothroyd stated.

"On the pitch, players know exactly what is going on. The player [Santos] has actually run across Casemiro, he can't get out of the way because he is running as well at speed.

"There is nothing you can do apart from maybe put your arms up and try and get out of the way. I think that is what he is trying to do there. I think that is really harsh to give him a second yellow there to send him off.

"I think that is really harsh because he is trying to get out of the way, there is nothing he can do there at all."

As a result of receiving two yellow cards, Casemiro will now serve a one-match ban, ruling him out of the Premier League match against Brentford this weekend. The Brazilian will be eligible to play again in United's home game against Sunderland on October 4.
