Fans of true crime can’t afford to miss out on Netflix ’s latest instalment from its Monster franchise.
From American Horror Story and American Crime Story creator Ryan Murphy and The Watcher’s Ian Brennan comes a new limited series focusing on a grim real-life serial killer.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story dramatises the case of American serial killer and grave robber Ed Gein, who was also known by the blood-chilling monikers ‘the Butcher of Plainfield’ or ‘the Plainfield Ghoul’, with Netflix recently dropping a trailer.
This new drama follows in the footsteps of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which became one of Netflix’s most-watched shows ever, and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
Here’s the lowdown on the harrowing new series, which Netflix says will “unmask the origins of modern horror” this autumn.

When will Monster: The Ed Gein Story be released on Netflix?Netflix will be dropping Monster: The Ed Gein Story globally on October 3.
All episodes from the new series will be available to watch in one go.
Speaking about the forthcoming series, Murphy became fascinated by the little-known killer and body snatcher after being caught up in a “creative tailwind”.
Brennan, who wrote the entire series, told Netflix’s Tudum: “I think this is the best season of the three, and I think it’s going to blow people’s socks off.”
He went on to tell the outlet: “Ed Gein’s fairly obscure. It’s this man who lived in a farmhouse and didn’t know very many people, and you’re watching his descent into deep, deep madness and then ultimately into killing people.
“That seemed like a big ask for a show that has been quite popular. Is that too much to ask of a global audience?”
Monster: The Ed Gein Story features an impressive cast led by British Sons of Anarchy actor Charlie Hunnam in the title role.
Joining him is The Idol’s Suzanna Son as Adeline Watkins, Pride and Prejudice actor Tom Hollander as Alfred Hitchcock, Desperately Seeking Susan star Laurie Metcalf as Ed’s mother Augusta Gein, Phantom Thread’s Vicky Krieps as Ilse Koch, Rushmore star Olivia Williams as Alma Reville.
Further cast members include Love, Simon actor Joey Pollari as Psycho actor Anthony Perkins, Tyler Jacob Moore from Perry Mason as Sheriff Schley, Monsters alummi Charlie Hall as Deputy Worden, The OA star Will Brill as Tobe Hooper, In the Loop’s Mimi Kennedy as Dr. Mildred Newman, Deadwood actress Robin Weigert as Enid Watkins, and Another Year star Lesley Manville as Bernice Worden.

The show follows the life and crimes of killer Ed Gein, who operated during the 1940s and 1950s in Wisconsin.
However, not only does the show recount the horrific cases, but it gives insight into how the Gein case shocked the nation and inspired American horror stories.
Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, Thomas Harris’ novel The Silence of the Lambs as well as Jonathan Demme’s 1991 film adaptation, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre were all inspired by the Gein case.
From his complex and co-dependent relationship with his mother to his gruesome crimes, these details have become iconic elements of Hollywood horror.
Even Murphy’s American Horror Story: Asylum took inspiration from the Gein case, with the character Dr. Oliver Thredson mirroring the real-life murderer.
Murphy said about the upcoming show: “[Gein] is probably one of the most influential people of the 20th century, and yet people don’t know that much about him.
“He influenced some of the biggest serial killers of the 20th century — which is another thing that I think people did not and do not know about him — Ted Bundy, and on and on and on.”
Monster: The Ed Gein Story is just one of three shows about the killer this year.
Back in May, MGM+ dropped Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein, which features the never-before-heard recordings of the grave robber and serial killer, offering an insight into his warped mind.
Meanwhile, a week after Netflix drops its offering, Crime+Investigation will be released Ed Gein: Original Psycho.
The true crime documentary will follow the original three-day police investigation into Gein over two episodes, including transcripts, unseen archive footage and historical collections relating to the killer.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story will be released on Netflix on October 3
