It was meant to be an idyllic family getaway, but it turned into an utterly horrifying crime after an explosive row erupted between a mother and her teen daughter.
Heather Mack led a rather luxurious lifestyle for a teenager. As the daughter of a renowned jazz musician and a millionaire mother, she enjoyed extravagant holidays to stunning destinations.
However, while on holiday inBali, Indonesia, with her mother Sheila von Wiese-Mack, and then-boyfriend Tommy Schaefer, a sickening act of violence unfolded.
Schaefer brutally murdered Mack's mother by bludgeoning her to death with a fruit bowl. The couple then stuffed her blood-soaked body into a suitcase and abandoned it in the boot of a taxi.

Mack alleged that her boyfriend committed the murder following a massive argument with her mother about her pregnancy. She claimed her mother made racist comments, which enraged Schaefer, leading him to use the metal handle of a fruit bowl to commit the crime, Crime Monthly reports.
According to Mack, this was something the couple had been planning for a while when in Chicago. She stated: "My mother was a racist. That is why this happened." Yet, she conceded that Sheila "didn't deserve to die".
Mack also alleged that her mother was an abusive alcoholic who would extinguish cigarettes on her daughter's arms and even set her hair alight once. However, family friends contested these allegations, insisting that it was Mack who would assault her mother, often biting and hitting her, even reportedly breaking her arm once.

Schaefer claimed in court that he had killed Sheila in self-defence after she attacked him in fury because she objected to the couple's relationship. "Although I do take full responsibility for my actions, I am not a murderer," he previously told Reuters.
Mack, who was expecting a child when got involved in the gruesome crime, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for being an accessory to murder at the age of 19. She gave birth behind bars and was permitted to raise her daughter in prison until the child turned two, with her little girl later raised by a Bali foster family for five years.
Schaefer, who committed the premeditated murder in 2014, is serving an 18-year sentence in prison. Meanwhile, Mack, from Chicago, was released from Bali prison in 2021 at the age of 25 for good behaviour and returned to the US, but was arrested, charged and jailed again.
