This 2023 film was adapted from the first novel of a bestselling author who has since gone on to write one of the most talked about books on TikTok and Instagram.

Despite receiving a strong 81 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, audiences have been split down the middle, giving it a 53 percent rating.

It was instantly polarising after its premiere at Sundance in January 2023, with critic Amanda the Jedi noting on X: “EILEEN is so far the biggest ‘well that took a turn’ movie of the fest. Gonna be polarizing but a lot of people will love it. Ending certainly gonna split people.”

The dark, erotic drama is sure to have countless more viewers talking about the surreal twists and turns now it’s available to stream on the world’s biggest streaming service.

We’re talking about the film Eileen, based on the book of the same name by author Ottessa Moshfegh, who later penned My Year of Rest and Relaxation.

Starring Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie, it follows the complex relationship between two women working at a correctional facility for teenage boys in 1960s Massachusetts.

Despite the polarising reception of Eileen, many thriller fans are convinced it’s one of the most underrated new releases of the 2020s.

One five-star Google review raved: “This little gem of a movie was a surprising hit with me! I saw it a few times. Even the score was great and I'm not a Jazz fan.

“I can't recommend it enough! See it! It's only 90 minutes but, you'll be thinking about weeks later, like [I] am.”

Someone else teased the unpredictable narrative: “Very original. Unpredictable. I kept thinking I knew what was going to happen next but I was always wrong. Excellent cast.”

“All said, Eileen is a four-star flick that offers more twists than a pretzel factory,” another strong review said.

“It’s perfect for those who like their thrillers with a hefty dose of bizarre and a sprinkle of existential dread. Crack open the popcorn and settle in; just don't expect to sleep easy afterwards. This film sticks with you, like gum on your shoe.”

While another viewer who was befuddled by the twist conclusion said: “I enjoyed the first half of the movie especially with Anne and Thomazin's chemistry but damn the plot twist hit me so hard it lost me, got me frustrated, so confused and got me on the edge of my seat.

“It's definitely intriguing but the ending makes you lose your mind and want to know more. There are so many questions that needed answers.”

And a final shocked fan added: “I’m so used to seeing movies like this and guessing what’s gonna happen next but this one I can say it had me shocked.

“I was on my toes, good movie but just like any other movie the ending can get you a little mad. But I recommend watching it!”
