Netflix drops huge update for 'deeply personal' crime thriller after major setback

Netflix has unveiled an exciting update for crim thriller fans as an official first look has been shared for a new project which had suffered major delays.

The Rip, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, was directed by Joe Carnahan and it features some other huge names including The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun.

Carnahan told Tudum about the strong bond between Affleck and Damon, who have been friends since elementary school.

He shared: "Working with Matt and Ben and having two, distinctly talented filmmakers, as both creative allies and the studio heads, wound up being the best of both worlds.

"I've never had as easy an experience on a movie as I had on The Rip. They took exceptionally good care of me and backed my decisions every step of the way.”

The film is slated for January 16 and, after discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, a team of Miami cops come under fire.

As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including the trust amongst the group.

Carnahan explained how the inspiration for the film "came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department".

He expanded: "It's inspired in part by his life and then, by my enduring love for those classic ‘70's cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era.

"Films like Serpico and Prince of The City and more recently, Michael Mann's Heat.”

The title refers to a phrase used by Miami cops when they seize things from criminals.

Some first-look photos have also been unveiled and they show Yeun working with Damon and Affleck as they make a major discovery.

The news comes after it was announced in June that the film would be delayed, as it was originally meant to air this autumn.

No reason was given as to why the release date was pushed back to 2026.

The Rip will air on Netflix on January 16
