Nottingham Forest's stance on sacking Ange Postecoglou after targeting rival boss

Nottingham Forest are leaning towards keeping Ange Postecoglou at the City Ground - despite his disastrous start. The former Tottenham boss has seen his position quickly come under scrutiny after failing to claim a single win in his opening seven matches.

Postecoglou replaced Nuno Espirito Santo in the Midlands after Evangelos Marinakis sacked the Portuguese coach after their relationship deteriorated. Nuno guided Forest to Europa League qualification last term.

The Tricky Trees now sit 17th in the Premier League and are without a win since beating Brentford on the first day of the season. Since arriving at the City Ground, Postecoglou has lost three of his four league games and overseen a draw against Real Betis and home defeat to Danish side Midtjylland.

The Australian manager has already received chants of 'you're getting sacked in the morning' by Forest's own supporters. Postecoglou responded by saying: "The fans are disappointed. They're allowed to have their opinion on it and I heard their opinion."

But the Daily Mail report that the club are currently siding towards keeping Postecoglou for the clash against Chelsea next Saturday, October 18. Forest planned to use the international break to weigh up a decision.

That choice does not yet appear to be set in stone. The report adds that circumstances could yet shift again, despite Marinakis being unlikely to make a move in the remainder of the international break.

Forest have already been linked with a replacement and are said to have marked out Fulham boss Marco Silva as a top target. The 48-year-old has impressed in charge of the Cottagers and stabilised the team in the top flight.

But Marinakis has only appointed managers who are already out of work during his tenure at Forest. The Greek owner has not needed to conduct lengthy negotiations over compensation.

Silva's contract is set to expire at the end of the season. The former Everton and Watford coach has a hefty release clause, but that will not be required if Marinakis can hold off until next summer to make his move.

For Postecoglou's part, he admitted he 'expects' to have a discussion with Marinakis and the Forest hierarchy about 'what we have embarked on here, where we are at and what we are going to do'.

Speaking last weekend, the ex-Spurs manager said: "If people want to make an assessment after three and a half weeks, after we have had seven games, there's nothing I can do about that.

"At the same time, there's nothing wrong with things being tough. I did have an option - I could have been sitting on the couch watching the game and not be in the middle of it. I'd much rather be here. I love a fight."
