Russia targeting UK military satellites in space 'every week' warns top general

Russia has been targeting UKsatellites in space on a weekly basis, a top military general has warned.

Maj Gen Paul Tedman, the head of the UK Space Command, revealed just how much Moscow has been trying to interfere with UK assets. He made the stark warning during a visit to RAF Fylingdales in North Yorkshire. The base is home to Britain and the United States Ballistic Missile Early Warning System.

During his visit, Gen Tedman further stressed that Russia has also attempted to block the satellites with ground-based systems. "We're seeing our satellites being jammed by the Russians on a reasonably persistent basis," he said

Gen Tedman explained that Russia are monitoring and are actively trying to gather information from the satellites, reports BBC. He said: "They're interested in what we're doing and flying relatively close. They've got payloads on board that can see our satellites and are trying to collect information from them."

He went onto reference other countries tactics such as Donald Trump, who plans to build a shield around the US. Gen Tedman added: "We've committed to invest a billion pounds into integrated air and missile defence, and I'd be surprised if there's not a space aspect to how we're going to defend the UK from threats very similar to [America's] Golden Dome."

Germany's defence minister issued a similar warning last month. Boris Pistorius said Vladimir Putin's country was shadowing their military satellites. He warned that Russia and China have “expanded their capabilities for warfare in space rapidly over the past years”.

Last week, the minister told a space industry conference in Berlin: "They can disrupt satellite operations, blind satellites, manipulate or kinetically destroy them. Satellite networks are now the achilles heel of modern societies. Attacking them can paralyse entire countries. We know that the conflicts of the future will no longer be confined to the Earth. They will also be fought openly in orbit.”
