Ryan Reynolds' gesture to 13-year-old girl battling aggressive cancer sums him up

Hollywood star and Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has left fundraisers amazed by making a big donation. The Wrexham Police football team are raising funds for Lexi Collins, a 13-year-old girl from Deeside in North Wales.

Lexi is battling a rare and aggressive form of heart cancer. In recent months, she's undergone two open-heart surgeries, had a pacemaker fitted, and is currently receiving intensive chemotherapy treatment.

Despite her ordeal, her biggest wish is to jet off to New York once she's well enough. Her family are trying to raise £20,000 to make that dream come true. They've already collected £12,500 and Wrexham Police FC were hoping to chip in £5,000 towards the appeal by hosting a charity football match.

On Sunday morning, they were left stunned when Deadpool actor Reynolds donated a massive £10,000 to the cause via GoFundMe.

The North Flintshire community policing team said: "A huge thank you to long-time Wrexham Police FC supporter and friend Ryan Reynolds for once again showing his incredible generosity.

"Lexi will be heading to New York when she's feeling well enough. Not all heroes wear capes, this one wears a red and black suit. Thank you."

Lexi's mum Becky, speaking before the contribution was announced, said: "Lexi has always been obsessed with Christmas - especially the movie Home Alone.

"Her biggest wish is to visit New York at Christmas, to see the Rockefeller Christmas tree and all the festive magic of the city, just like Kevin in the movie.

"After everything she's been through, we just want to give Lexi something to look forward to. Something magical. Something that feels like hope."

Reynolds and fellow actor Rob Mac took over Wrexham in February 2021, propelling the Red Dragons from the National League to the Championship with three back-to-back promotions.

Their journey with the club has been documented in the award-winning FX series Welcome To Wrexham, which has recently been renewed for a fifth series and has bagged ten Emmy awards.

The duo have generously supported numerous local causes during their tenure at Wrexham. Reynolds was spotted in the crowd on Saturday as Phil Parkinson's team suffered a 3-1 loss at home to Queens Park Rangers.

Joining him in the owners' box was Colin Hanks, son of Hollywood legend Tom Hanks, and former Manchester United star Phil Jones. Despite splashing out roughly £33million on new talent over the summer, Wrexham have only managed a single victory from their first five matches in the second tier and currently sit 21st in the league table.
