Spice Girls icon and All Saints star join Rebel Wilson for huge new movie

Spice Girl Melanie C, All Saints’ Shaznay Lewis and Pussycat Dolls singer Ashley Roberts will join forces with a Hollywood star to create the girlband of dreams. Rebel Wilson is behind a new film which sees them form a supergroup.

It will also feature telly favourite Sheridan Smith, who most recently starred in ITV true crime drama I Fought The Law. The five-piece will become band Girlfriends for a new blockbuster movie.

Directed by Bridesmaids star Rebel, she will play a pop diva who’s been kicked out of her own group’s reunion tour and then told she must do community service by the courts. Her character then hatches a comeback by coaching a group of misfit teen girls for a big audition to get signed by a top record label.

But in typical movie fashion, it doesn't go to plan. Pushing them too far, she’s forced to face the issue of a toxic music industry and her own problems at the same time.

Called Girl Group, the comedy has started filming in the UK, reports Deadline. Rebel says it’s the “ultimate girl power movie.” “Ever since being a part of the Pitch Perfect franchise, I’ve always wanted to create something similar,” she said. “Girl Group is just so fun and full of spirit that’s ready to have you singing and dancing out of the cinema.”

Rebel will be hoping this project goes smoother than her first foray into directing. The Deb, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, still hasn’t been released as a legal wrangle between the Australian star and the film’s British producers goes on.

Rebel’s in Sky’s Original Cinema’s Christmas film Tinsel Town later this year alongside Kiefer Sutherland and Danny Dyer. Sutherland plays Bradley Mack, a failed Hollywood action star who ends up in a small, snow-dusted village to star in the town’s eccentric production of Cinderella. Here, he encounters a colourful cast of oddball locals who slowly come to hold a special place in his heart, including no-nonsense choreographer Jill (Wilson).

Rebel lived out her pop star dreams on stage at Reading Festival this summer, when she joined The Kooks on stage. Fans went wild when Rebel made a surprise appearance and performed with the band.

Approaching the microphone to rapturous screams, she joked to the audience: “What’s up Reading? Seeing as I’m out here, I thought I should sing a classic Kooks song… so I don’t know about you guys, but I was thinking about Gangsta’s Paradise…”. The band members looked at each other in faux confusion, before firing up an uncanny rendition of the Coolio hit, with Rebel rapping every verse seamlessly.
