The Girlfriend, the latest thriller sensation on Prime Video, has rapidly gained a following amongst telly enthusiasts.

Olivia Cooke stars as Cherry, a young, working-class estate agent who becomes entangled with a wealthy family after sparks fly with a trainee surgeon named Daniel, portrayed by Laurie Davidson.

As of now, Prime Video hasn't confirmed whether the series will be back for a second run.

The Girlfriend is based on the thriller novel by Michelle Frances of the same title, which has a definitive ending and no published sequel.

However, the events in the series finale seem to suggest a potential continuation.

Chatting with the Mirror at the London premiere of the show, producer Jonathan Cavendish hinted at his eagerness to extend the story, despite no official confirmation from Prime Video as yet.

"If people want a second one... episode six has what I'd like to think is a pretty decent cliffhanger," he revealed.

"So, we originally thought 'No, we'll just make one'. Then, as we were going, we thought this is so good it would be a pity [to end it].

"But it's great to not think about another season until you get to an end and you realise there's a logic to a cliffhanger. And, I promise you, it's a good one."

Cavendish's remarks that the season finale was penned with the intention of continuing the narrative are a strong indication that The Girlfriend will return for more.

Viewers will have to keep their fingers crossed that the series has been popular enough to earn a renewal from the streaming service, which probably won't be clear for a few more weeks.

Meanwhile, author Frances expressed her desire to see all of her books adapted for the screen eventually.

She stated: "I know from working in telly that things can take a long time and it's a precarious business.

"But it would be absolutely fantastic to have another one out there. Fingers crossed people enjoy watching it."
