UK households told to put lemon peel in dishwasher for important reason

Send Push

Households are being encouraged to pop a lemon in their dishwasherthis winter. Yes, you've read it correctly.

The dishwasher, a real game-changer in the kitchen, saves us from the drudgery of scrubbing grimy dishes. Instead, you can simply load everything into the dishwasher each night and press a button.

However, like allhome appliances, even dishwashers require some upkeep to function properly and need a bit of elbow grease to stay clean. After all, there's little sense in placing your finest crockery in a grubby dishwasher.

Home cleaning gurus suggest an easy and inexpensive way torestore shine to your dishwasher and prevent odours and stains from taking hold - by using slices or peels of lemon.

Domestic advice website The Kitchn suggests that you can use either lemon peel or a full lemon wedge, reports the Express.

The site explains: "Here's how it works: Place a lemon peel or a full lemon wedge (even one that's been juiced) on the top rack of your dishwasher, skewered on a plate wire, or in the cutlery department, and run a normal cycle. The lemon will help freshen the load (a very faint lemon scent, but still there), but more importantly it'll leave your dishes sparkly!".

This tip is corroborated by Homes and Gardens, which states: "The idea is that you cut a lemon in half, remove all the seeds, and place the halves in the top rack of your dishwasher so they can work their citrus magic. Not only is this safe, but... it will help freshen up your dishwasher."

It continues: "As long as you don't overload the dishwasher with too many lemon halves, using lemons in your dishwasher is safe to do. Just one or two does the trick. They're not going to damage your dishwasher, and they're great for keeping things fresh."

So, if you're looking for an effective and low-cost method to make your dishwasher look good as new, using a lemon will be the answer to all of your household cleaning chores.
