Wayne Rooney Man Utd question that led to Sir Alex Ferguson bust up has "never been answered"

Wayne Rooney maintained that his concerns around Manchester United's future and his subsequent bust up with Sir Alex Ferguson is a question that "still hasn't been answered".

The club's great goalscorer was poised to sign a new deal in 2010 but wanted clarity on the club's direction after he'd seen his fellow forwards Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez both sold by the Red Devils. United had just lost the league title to Chelsea and Rooney wanted to know who they were signing.

Ferguson didn't take kindly to his authority being questioned and the pair clashed, leading to Rooney putting in a transfer request. The saga lasted just a matter of days before the Evertonian penned a new contract.

But looking back Rooney claims his concerns were later realised. The Manchester outfit won the top flight in 2011 and 2013, but with an ageing squad that lacked the superstar talent of yesteryear and Rooney believes no answer has ever been offered as to what the club's plan was.

He said on : "I think that question I asked then, in 2010, it still hasn't been answered, been addressed, from 2010. And I think fans have seen... I don't think, if fans look back, they'd be like, you know what, he actually seen what was coming a little bit. And I don't think it's been fixed since 2010."

United have failed to even challenge for the title since 2013 with David Moyes and Louis van Gaal coming in after Ferguson, but both men were left to transition an ageing squad. Huge sums were spent, but recruitment has been a major issue with Rooney holding on to the fact that his concerns in 2010 were legitimate.

He added: "Well, if I look back to 2010, I don't think it has. I don't think, we obviously won the league in 2013, but lots changed, obviously. Commercially, social media, everything changed. But I still think when we lost Ronaldo and Tevez, from that moment, we got Robin in, obviously, for a couple years.

"But from that moment the club has never had a group of forwards who... Look, before my time, with Teddy, with Solskjaer, Coley, Yorkie. Then you've got me, Ronaldo, Tevez, Berbatov, Saha. From that moment, the club has never had a group of forwards who can all play and come win you games. And that is Man United."

Rooney admits with the benefit of hindsight maybe his decision to challenge Ferguson wasn't right, but ultimately claimed "I still think I had a right to ask the question." The forward was unsure whether the club were entering a period of transition, which ultimately has proven to be the case.
