ITR Filing 2025: Will the Deadline Be Extended Again? Here's Why Tax Experts Are Demanding It

Send Push

If you are yet to file your Income Tax Return (ITR), this update is crucial. For the financial year 2024–25, the current deadline is 15 September 2025. But both taxpayers and chartered accountants (CAs) are facing difficulties in meeting this date. According to a Moneycontrol report, the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) along with several tax experts have requested the government to extend the deadline further.

Why is an Extension Being Demanded?
  • Late release of ITR forms and utilities has already shortened the filing window.

  • Technical glitches on the tax portal — frequent login failures, system errors, and timeouts — are disrupting smooth filing.

  • Errors and delays in updating key documents like Form 26AS, AIS, and TIS are preventing taxpayers from getting correct financial details.

  • Implementation of new formats for financial data has increased the workload.

  • The upcoming festival season (August–November) further adds to the time crunch for taxpayers as well as CAs.

Challenges Faced by Tax Professionals

Tax professionals say that despite repeated attempts, returns fail to upload on the portal or errors keep reappearing. Many times data does not get updated properly, making it difficult to finalize ITRs. This has caused a serious bottleneck in the filing process.

Will the Deadline Be Extended?
  • Earlier, the government had already extended the ITR filing date from 31 July to 15 September 2025, citing lack of time due to rule changes and new forms.

  • Now, GCCI has recommended that the deadline be further extended to 30 October 2025.

  • Officially, 15 September remains the last date, but considering the ongoing portal issues and industry pressure, another extension looks possible.

What Should Taxpayers Do Now?
  • Try to file your ITR at the earliest to avoid last-minute server overload.

  • Keep checking whether Form 26AS, AIS, and TIS are updated with correct details.

  • In case of any portal issue, immediately report the problem to the Income Tax Department.

Bottom Line

While the government has not yet announced an extension beyond 15 September, growing pressure from industry bodies and the ground reality of technical glitches suggest that taxpayers may get extra time. But to stay safe, it’s better not to wait until the last day.
