In a shocking late-night incident in Mumbai’s Andheri area, a 23-year-old delivery boy killed his father and grandfather and severely injured his uncle. The accused, identified as Chetan Bhatre, later surrendered at the MIDC police station and confessed to the crime, claiming he was driven by years of alleged torture and abuse.
The IncidentThe crime occurred around midnight on Tuesday when Chetan, returning home from work, got into yet another heated argument with his father over money. According to police reports, the quarrel escalated quickly, and when Chetan’s grandfather and uncle intervened, they allegedly sided with his father.
Enraged, Chetan fetched a kitchen knife and attacked his father, Manoj Bhatre (57), stabbing him multiple times. When his grandfather, 79-year-old Ram Bhatre, and his uncle Anil tried to intervene, he attacked them as well. His father and grandfather died on the spot, while his uncle sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains under treatment.
Years of Struggle and AbuseDuring questioning, Chetan told the police that he had endured abuse since childhood. He alleged that his father, grandfather, and uncle regularly harassed both him and his mother. His mother eventually left the household after being unable to tolerate the alleged mistreatment.
Despite her departure, Chetan claimed that the harassment continued. He alleged that the family members frequently demanded money from him and his sister, often snatching away their salaries after consuming alcohol. According to him, Tuesday night’s confrontation was the breaking point.
“My grandfather, father, and uncle constantly tortured us. They drove my mother out of the house, and even after that, they never changed. They would drink, fight, and take away our earnings. That night, I could not take it anymore,” Chetan reportedly told the police.
Confession and ArrestAfter committing the murders, Chetan walked to the MIDC police station in the early hours of Wednesday morning and surrendered. He narrated the sequence of events and admitted to stabbing his father, grandfather, and uncle.
The police have arrested him and registered a case of double murder and attempted murder. The bodies of Manoj and Ram Bhatre have been sent for post-mortem examination, while further statements are being recorded from family members and neighbors to verify Chetan’s claims.
Community ShockedThe gruesome incident has left residents of Andheri shocked. Neighbors described Chetan as a quiet young man who mostly kept to himself, though some admitted they had occasionally witnessed arguments in the household.
“This is a tragic case of violence within a family. While the accused has confessed, we are investigating the background of his claims of harassment and abuse,” a senior police officer said.
A Larger Issue of Domestic AbuseThe case sheds light on the dark reality of domestic violence and long-term abuse, which can sometimes lead to extreme outcomes. Psychologists emphasize that unresolved family conflicts, constant humiliation, and financial exploitation can deeply affect young adults, pushing them into acts of desperation.
“Such cases underline the importance of early intervention in abusive households. If left unchecked, emotional trauma can explode into violent behavior,” said a Mumbai-based family counselor.
