What kind of heaviness in the legs and what are the problems that can be symptoms of a weak heart? To know about this, we have talked to well-known cardiologists doctors. They have told about the symptoms, causes and prevention methods of heart diseases related to the legs.
If you have any heart related disease, then not enough blood does not reaches the body. This can cause symptoms like swelling or heaviness in some parts of the body, especially in the legs and ankles. Although these symptoms can also be of kidney disease, joint disease, but if any other problems are also happening along with them, then do not ignore it.
What symptoms are seen in the legs due to heart weakness?
Dr. Varun Bansal of the cardiology department at Apollo Hospital explains that apart from swelling in the legs, many other symptoms can also be seen when the heart is weak. These should not be ignored at all. If you feel breathless along with pain in the legs after doing a little activity or climbing stairs or feel tired without much effort, then do not ignore it.
According to Dr Bansal, if your shoe size is the same and still it does not fit, then this can be a sign of fluid retention in the legs. This happens due to the reduction in the pumping capacity of the heart (Ejection Fraction), but this is a symptom seen in very few people. But if you have swelling in your legs, which is persistent, and you have high BP, diabetes, or thyroid, then do not ignore these symptoms.
Why does the heart become weak?
Dr Ajit Jain of the cardiology department at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital in Delhi says that there can be many reasons for the weakening of the heart. These include high cholesterol, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, mental stress or lack of sleep. Apart from these, if someone has a family history of heart problems, then he or she is also at risk of having heart problems.
What to do if symptoms appear?
According to Dr. Ajit Jain, if any symptoms related to a heart problem are seen, then it should not be ignored. Rather, one should consult an expert as soon as possible. Also, medicines should be taken as per the doctor's advice and tests should be done if needed. Apart from this, improving lifestyle and eating habits can be beneficial. Heart diseases can be prevented by controlling blood pressure, sugar or cholesterol.
How to prevent heart disease?
According to Dr Jain, to prevent heart diseases, it is good to consume green vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk, fish, and dry fruits. Apart from this, one should walk for at least 30 minutes daily or do yoga. For swelling of the feet, one can apply warm water fomentation and it is good to rest by keeping the feet elevated.
