Nepal's first female Chief Justice Sushila Karki has now taken oath as interim Prime Minister. Born in a farmer family, Karki studied law from Tribhuvan University and has long been recognized for her fearless and impartial image in the judiciary. She became the Chief Justice of Nepal in 2016 and now in 2025, she has been entrusted with the executive leadership of Nepal.
Former judge Sushila Karki has become the interim Prime Minister of Nepal. She has taken oath as the Prime Minister. The President has administered the oath of office to her. At around 9:30 pm, Nepal's President Ramchandra Poudel administered the oath of office to Sushil Karki as the Prime Minister. No one other than Sushila Karki has taken oath in the swearing-in ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan Sheetal Niwas. However, no face associated with the Gen Ji movement has been included in this cabinet.
Sushila Karki has created another history after becoming the Prime Minister. She became the first woman Chief Justice and now she has become the first woman Prime Minister of Nepal.
Who is Sushila Karki?Born in a farmer family, Sushila Karki has been a prominent name in the history of Nepal's judiciary. Karki, the eldest of seven children of her parents, was born on 7 June 1952 in Shankharpur, Morang. While living in Biratnagar, she also became associated with B.P. Koirala's family and the democratic movement.
According to the records of the Judicial Council, he passed the graduation (BA) examination from Mahendra Morang College in Biratnagar in 1971-72 (2028). After this, he received a postgraduate degree in political science from Banaras Hindu University in 1974-75 (2031). During his education, he met Congress leader Durga Subedi and later married her. Subedi has been a senior leader of the Nepali Congress and was also involved in the famous plane hijacking incident organized by the party in 1973-74 (2030).
Completed studies from Tribhuvan UniversityKarki completed her law studies from Tribhuvan University in 1977-78 (2034) and started her professional life as an advocate in Biratnagar from 1979-80 (2036). She also taught at Mahendra Multipurpose Campus in Dharan for four years from 1985-86 (2042). Active in the Biratnagar Bar Association, she held several responsible positions and became a senior advocate in January 2005 (PUS 2061).
Due to her honest, fearless and bold image, the then Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha proposed to appoint her to the Supreme Court. She became a temporary judge on 22 January 2009 (9 Magh 2065) and permanent after two years. After being a judge for seven years and seven months, she became the acting Chief Justice on 13 April 2016 (1 Vaishakh 2073). After the parliamentary hearing was completed three months later, she was appointed the first woman Chief Justice of Nepal and headed the judiciary for about 15 months until May/June 2017 (Jeth 2074).
