Cheese on toast is a staple British dish, perfect for a light snack, midnight feast, or in place of dinner. However, a nutritionist shared a simple ingredient swap to take it to the next level.
Emily English recently spoke in a TikTok video about how cheese on toast has gained popularity on social media. Instead of just using cheddar, Emily added another type of cheese to make it taste great, and help keep to a balanced diet. For this recipe you'll need cottage cheese.

Emily said: "I always find social media tends to go nuts for toast."
She paired cheese with onions and green chilli to give it a warming heat. Emily continued: "If you're a lover of cheese on toast, you will absolutely adore this. And even if you don't like cottage cheese, I do encourage you to give it a go."

If healthy eating is on your mind, a good way to increase your protein intake is to swap out regular cheese for cottage cheese, which is rich in protein and calcium, the latter of which is good for bone health. Each portion has 232 calories and 18 grams of protein.
Emily's video has been viewed over a massive 1.1 million times, receiving 51,300 likes and 227 comments. Elle-o commented: "Gonna try this. I love regular chilli cheese toast and cottage cheese is amazing to up the protein."

Ingredients
- 1 slice bread
- 2 tbsp cottage cheese (full fat or low)
- 25g grated mature cheddar
- 1/4 small red onion, finely diced
- 1/4 green pepper, diced
- 1 tbsp fresh chopped coriander (or use parsley)
- 1/2 tsp chopped fresh green chilli
Method
Mix the cottage cheese with cheddar, onion, pepper, coriander, chilli and season with a crack of black pepper and salt.
Top onto your bread of choice. Air fry at 200 fan for eight to ten minutes or bake in the oven at 200 fan for ten to 12 minutes.
