Overtourism has taken over the once-loved Majorca and now, holidaymakers are looking elsewhere for their summer holidays. Out of the 3.6 million British tourists who visited the Balearic Islands in 2024, only 64 percent visited Majorca, highlighting the tourism downturn.
If you used to love Majorca but are looking elsewhere for another destination, experts at eurochange have shared their favourite dupe destinations. Dupe destinations are a great way to get what you love from Majorca without the crowds, or the anti-tourism sentiment. Laura Evans-Fisk, head of digital and engagement at eurochange said: "Majorca has historically been one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.
"But, we are already seeing tourists opt for alternative destinations following the overtourism protests last year. So to avoid fuelling the overtourism problem over there, we wanted to share some similar holiday spots that are equally as beautiful and offer just as much historic charm."
One of the top places she recommends is Lassithi in Crete. She said: "If you're looking to escape the crowds this summer, then Lassithi is a fantastic holiday spot, offering a peaceful, authentic Greek experience, with very reasonable prices too.
"Lassithi's coastline is much less developed and often more secluded than those in Majorca, so you won't need to worry about being able to get a secluded sunbathing spot.
"This region is also a must visit for foodies, some of the best Greek produce is made here including olive oil and honey. Try visiting one of its many olive oil farms to really immerse yourself in some authentic Greek culture."
Lassithi is a very reasonably priced destination with a beer setting you back just £3.98, and an average meal price of £8.76. Even better, Airbnb's are available on the island from just £32.
Direct return flights to Crete are available from Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham airports, starting from£125 in August.
