Donald Trump has been mocked online for wearing golf shoes en route to the Ryder Cup. The US president and avid golf fan is visiting the biennial men's golf competition, which sees Americans face off against their European counterparts.

Trump addressed the media before he boarded Marine One, where he was asked about the situation in Gaza and the news that James Comey has been indicted on criminal charges. But it was his choice of outfit, mixing a black suit, no tie and pristine white golf shoes that caught the attention of many online. Trump would only be watching the golf, not playing it, which is what made the shoe selection a touch bizarre.

One user on X said: "Trump wearing a suit and white golf shoes.

"Imagine the outrage if someone met him and they did the same. He's unhinged. He going to the Ryder cup and not playing in it. Weird."

Another added: "Yup, Trump is rocking golf shoes. About to board his helicopter from the White House to Bethpage," to which somebody replied: "'Rocking'? He looks like a penguin."

The US president is a well-known lover of golf, owning an array of courses around the world.

According to Trumpgolftrack.com, of Trump's 249 days in office, he has played golf on 38 days, representing 15.26% of his second term in the White House.

Security has been ramped up heavily ahead of the president's visit, with fans subjected to increased checks as they move about the course.

Earlier this week, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed that the tournament, which has been hosted continuously for nearly 100 years, would not have gone ahead were it not for President Trump's actions.

She told the media: "On Friday, the president will travel to Long Island for the Ryder Cup golf match between the United States and Europe.

"This event is one of the greatest sporting events in the world and it would not be taking place this year without President Trump's help.

"President Trump signed an executive order last week preventing a strike that would have crippled the New York City area ahead of the tournament."

The comments were widely mocked, with many people not believing the White House's claims about the president's contribution.

One said: "Next week she'll announce Trump invented golf, discovered Europe, and personally taught Tiger Woods how to swing."

Another added: "He's being very modest. Because at the very same moment when he was saving the Ryder Cup, he ended two wars and drug prices dropped by 1100%. Amazing."
