Melania Trump's outfit as she was greeted by Prince William and Princess Kate has sparked fierce reaction on social media. The First Lady and US President Donald Trump were welcomed to the UK by the Prince and Princess of Wales as they stepped off Marine One shortly after arriving at Windsor Castle. But Melania's choice of outfit for the occasion has caught people's attention.

Some observers said Mrs Trump looked elegant as she met the Waleses alongside her husband in the US president's unprecedented second state visit to the UK. However, others mocked the First Lady's appearance.

X-user, Steve Lewis, commented: "I'm sure that I saw Melania's hat on sale yesterday in the John Lewis lighting department".

Another X user, critical of the choice of hat, said: "Melania and her stupid hats. That woman can't handle eye contact".

Fellow X-user, Fannie Gail, praised Mrs Trump's outfit, saying: "I'm loving how Melania's hat matches Trump's tie".

Lynette Kennedy McQuain tweeted: "[mrs Trump] looks stunning. We are fortunate to have her. So classy. Love the hat".

Mrs Trump wore a purple hat matching Mr Trump's tie colour, but some royal watchers observed the brim of the royal purple hat was so low it was difficult to see her eyes.

Royal commentator Patricia Treble told followers on X that Mrs Trump almost saw her hat blown off due to the wind, arguably explaining the low positioning of the headpiece.

The US President and First Lady were treated to a personal, family-centred welcome outside Victoria House, a little-known property nestled in the Royal Kitchen Gardens at Frogmore on the private Windsor estate.

William and Kate were deployed at the start of the royal charm offensive to greet the Trumps who arrived in Marine One, the call sign of the United States Marine Corps aircraft carrying the president.

The state-of-the-art presidential helicopter, fitted with missile defence and radar jamming systems, landed on the lawn of the vast Walled Garden in the Berkshire grounds at 12.14pm.

King Charles had arrived with Queen Camilla in the state Bentley at 12.02pm before heading inside Victoria House, where the monarch could be seen standing just inside a door watching the helicopter land.

The timings were slightly behind schedule with Mr Trump stepping out of the helicopter at 12.16pm - behind the planned time of 11.55am.

The prince and princess escorted the president and his wife the short walking distance to meet the King and Queen in front of the gable-ended Victoria House.

The Trumps then travelled to Windsor Castle in a procession of horse-drawn carriages, past ranks of soldiers, sailors and aviators, as military bands played the US and UK national anthems.

King Charles and the US president chatted in the Irish State Coach during the short journey. The day of royal pageantry on the president's second state visit to Britain is on an unprecedented scale.

It includes some 120 horses and 1,300 troops, including the largest guard of honor in living memory.

After a private lunch on Wednesday and a visit to an exhibit of documents and artworks illustrating the ties between Britain and the US, it will be time for a state banquet.

Tiaras and medals will be on show as up to 160 guests gather around a 50m (165ft) long mahogany table set with 200-year-old silver to honour the president. King Charles will deliver a speech before the monarch and Mr Trump will offer toasts.
