One of the senior advisors on Donald Trump's presidential campaign has told Fox News Boston's Mayor, Michelle Wu, faces criminal charges for refusing to change the city's sanctuary policy to cooperate with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Stephen Miller explained the defiance could cost her dearly and said she is not alone in her actions. He argued: "Santuary cities like Boston refused to turn over these menacing threats to public safety, and so now they face not only revocation of funds, not only the loss of taxpayer support, but also potential criminal charges for harbouring and smuggling.
"This is as real as it gets. The Department of Justice laid out to these mayors how they were breaking our laws, and they refused to change their policy. And Attorney General Bondi is going to see this thing through to the end."
Mayor Wu reponded to a letter from Bondi publicly in a speech on the steps of City Hall. She said: "Boston received a letter from the Attorney General of the United States on official letterhead from the federal government threatening to prosecute city officials and withhold federal funds unless we cooperate with carrying out mass deportations.
"At a time when this federal administration is already causing so much fear and harm in our communities these threats are serious and consequential, but our same communities have told me loud and clear that silence in the face of oppression is not an option.
"The US Attorney General asked for a response...so here it is. Here is our response. Stop attacking our cities to hide your administration's failures. Unlike the Trump administration, Boston follows the law, and Boston will not back down from who we are and what we stand for," she continued.
The politician added: "We will not back away from our community that has made us the safest major city in the country, and the leading example of why cities around the country make this country safer, healthier and more prosperous for all Americans."
Her address was met with loud cheers of support from the assembled crowd who seemed tp share her feelings. A 'sanctuary policy' refers to local policies that restrict police cooperation with federal immigration enforcement agencies, such as ICE, to increase the safety and inclusion of immigrants.
While some sanctuary cities have stated their continued compliance with federal law in certain areas, the term 'sanctuary policy' itself describes a measure to reduce cooperation, not increase it.
