German tourists have been filmed sleeping on the streets of a Majorcan village after what appears to have been a heavy night of drinking. A video shared by the Instagram account Mallorcaviral has once again highlighted the longstanding issue in El Arenal, on the island's south coast. The footage shows a group of holidaymakers sprawled on the ground, sparking sarcastic comments about "quality tourism" and people saying it happens "every summer".
Mallorcaviral wrote: "A group of tourists was recorded while lying on the ground, occupying part of the street in El Arenal. The scene drew attention as they had no apparent intention of moving."
Hotels often bear the brunt of criticism, despite their efforts to kick out unruly guests.
The El Arenal residents association said it's not uncommon for German and Dutch tourists to embark on two to three-day binges in the area without securing accommodation, choosing instead to sleep on the ground.
This behaviour has caused concern as it goes against Majorca's tourism authorities' aim to create responsible and quality tourism.
The Llucmajor area of Arenal, where the video was captured, falls under the jurisdiction of the "responsible tourism decree".
The decree explicitly prohibits street drinking, yet there are beer cans visible in the video, raising questions about enforcement.
Despite periodic announcements from the town hall about increased police measures and awareness campaigns, local residents believe these efforts to be inadequate and the situation to be getting worse deteriorating.
One person sarcastically commented under the video, "This is tourism that enriches us, isn't it?", with a laughing face emoji.
Another suggested fining tourists who are found sleeping on the streets to discourage them from doing it again.
A third wrote: "In their country they can't do even half of the things they do in Majorca that's why they come here to do them.... What a disgusting tourism."
