Pests can be frustrating for gardeners as they chew and destroy plants. They can be notoriously tough to get rid of due to their small size and resistance to some pesticides.
However, one gardener has taken to social media to reveal a secret three-ingredient recipe to get rid of pests. The homemade method is safer than using store-bought pesticides and effective in keeping the pests away.
Content creator Mrs Jami P posted a video on TikTok and said: "So, you don't want to kill the bugs? You just want to get rid of them?"
She explained that she prevents pests from her garden by using a combination of onion, garlic and water in a spray bottle. She prefers the method to using chemical pesticides.
Mrs Jami P puts half a clove of garlic and half a spring onion into an empty spray bottle. She then adds water before mixing it up.
Simply spray the solution onto your plants and pests will be deterred. The method is reportedly effective in negating a number of pests, including caterpillars, snails, slugs, ants, and rabbits.
As well as being safer, the homemade mixture costs less than store-bought pesticides. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, some pesticides can increase the risk of cancer.
Garlic is effective as an insecticide as its sulfurous compounds interfere with pests' sensory receptors. This causes them to stay away and not come back.
The Garlic Farm said: "Garlic's legendary health attributes as a powerful antioxidant and mineral-rich food are also well documented.
"But its sulphurous compounds have another, less obvious but just as useful benefit: they can act as a natural repellent for many common insects.
"By harnessing this helpful side-effect, we can use garlic not only as an ingredient in our kitchens, but also in our medicine cabinets and gardening sheds."
