With its warm seas, medieval fortresses and 21C in November, Malta is a "great" destination for winter sun, a travel expert has said. Just over three hours from the UK, the Mediterranean island nation offers lively markets, bars, clubs, restaurants and theatres as well as hiking, diving and more for those in search of a more active winter break.
Independent travel expert Gilly Bachelor told the Daily Express that Malta is one of the best short haul winter sun breaks this season. She said: "Now is a great time to visit Valetta as it offers city and sun. You can also still swim in the sea because sea temperatures are still good. And there's great value. Anyone who doesn't want to go to the Canary Islands should take a look at Malta."

Gilly suggested Malta would particularly suit travellers who want a mix of relaxation, sightseeing and activities rather than those who just want to bake themselves in the sun. She recommended Malta's medieval streets and coastal walks.
Top spots for swimming as recommended by Visit Malta include Melliea Bay, Wied il-Gasri, Balluta Bay, The Blue Lagoon, Paradise Bay and Dalet Qorrot.
Malta is also said to be one of the world's best places for diving. Options here can include a shore dive from Marfa Point or Gasri Valley on the northern coast of Gozo.
Majjistral Nature and History Park is an ideal place for hiking while history buffs may be drawn to the cobbled streets of Malta's old capital, Mdina.
Foodies will be spoilt for choice with a range of eateries offering local cuisine as well as Italian, Greek and more. Recommendations include Trattoria del Mare, 1926 La Plage, Il Ristorante Italiano, Hammett's Monastik and Azar Malta.

For those looking for luxury accommodation, Gilly suggested AX The Palace Malta where she said in winter the prices are "really reasonable". It also boasts a rooftop bar.
Malta Marriott Hotel & Spa is in the heart of St Julian's and next to Balluta Bay. The Phoenicia has an infinity pool with views of Valletta's Marsamxett Harbour. Less expensive options include The Osiris, Vita Hotel and Mon-Chery.
Direct flights to Malta usually depart from London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Manchester Airport. easyJet, KM Malta Airlines and Qatar Airways fly direct from London to Luqa Malta International.
The average flight time is three hours and 15 minutes from London to Luqa, with the estimated best price found by Skyscanner at the time of writing just £27.
Average top temperatures are 25C, 21C and 18C in October, November and December respectively.
