Donald Trump was just "saying out loud what people are thinking" when he said Sadiq Khan was "terrible mayor, terrible, terrible mayor" in a speech to the United Nations.

President Trump made the remarks at at the UN General Assembly in New York, yesterday, saying: "I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, terrible, terrible mayor, and it's been changed, it's been so changed."

He then added: "Now they want to go to sharia law. But you are in a different country, you can't do that."

The comments prompted rapid dismissal from the Mayors office, who said: "We are not going to dignify his appalling and bigoted comments with a response."

They also described London as the "greatest city in the world" and said that it was safer that major US cities.

But now, a top Republican figure, Greg Swenson, who chairs the Republicans Overseas UK group, had hit out saying the intervention from the President was "classic President Trump", adding the President was "saying out loud what people are thinking" and that "a great percentage of people in London would agree."

Mr Swenson, a passionate supporter of the President added that: "most politicians on the left ignore the people, Donald J Trump does not. While illegal migration is a top two issue in the UK, as it was in the US last year, the leaders focus on net zero and "policing misinformation."."

He claimed that in going so they "ignore the obvious" and "advance destructive policies like open borders and hostility to the energy sector".

Mr Swenson said that Trump was angry that the capital city of tthe UK was "in managed decline", saying the President was "not afraid of stating the obvious. As usual he is unconventional and provocative, the left and media will go crazy, and a few days later, the politicians might actually pay attention to the top issues."

President Trump warned that Europe was "being invaded" by "illegal aliens" when he spoked to the United Nations.

He said: "Europe is in serious trouble. They have been invaded by a force of illegal aliens like nobody's ever seen before. Illegal aliens are pouring into Europe and nobody's doing anything to change it."

Later, Mr Khan took to X to post that people should "Ignore the haters", saying that "London is the goat."

Goat is internet slang for 'greatest of all time'.

The Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, also rushed to defend the embattled London Mayor after Mr Trumps attack.

He wrote on X: "Sadiq Khan is not trying to impose sharia law on London.

"This is a mayor who marches with Pride, who stands up for difference of background and opinion, who's focused on improving our transport, our air, our streets, our safety, our choices and chances. Proud he's our mayor."

Mr Trump had previously laid into Sir Sadiq last week in his state visit, where he said Khan was "among the worst mayors in the world".
