Arsenal and England's rising star, Michelle Agyemang, has suffered a crushing ACL injury just months after leading the Lionesses to victory in Euro 2025. The 19-year-old, who was crowned Young Player of the Tournament at the Euros, sustained the injury during England's match against Australia on Tuesday.
She could be heard screaming in pain through viewers' TV screens as they feared the worst for Agyemang, with those fears since being confirmed by the player herself. She has vowed to bounce back from an injury that will rule her out of the entire WSL season.
"[I'm] disappointed that results show a torn ACL," Agyemang wrote on social media. "I am so grateful for all the kind words and the support from everyone. Recovery starts now, I will be back stronger than before. In all things I give thanks to the Most High God. This test will surely turn into a testimony."
England have rallied behind the young player following the news. "As a member of the Lionesses family, she has the full support of the FA and everyone associated with our England teams. Lionesses staff will remain in regular contact with Michelle and her club and be on hand to aid any aspect of her rehabilitation," a statement read.
"We are with you on your road to recovery, Michelle."
England manager Sarina Wiegman had feared the worst after the off-the-ball injury. "Of course it was an awful moment, it doesn't look good," she said after the game.
"We don't know yet but I'm not very positive about what I've seen."
Arsenal also issued a statement, which read: "We can confirm that Michelle Agyemang suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury while playing in England's 3-0 win over Australia in Derby on Tuesday.
"Michelle came off the bench in the 62nd minute and sustained the injury just before the 80-minute mark. The 19-year-old forward, who is currently on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion, will miss the remainder of the 2025/26 season as a result of the injury.
"We are in close contact with Brighton as we determine a treatment and recovery programme for Michelle. We send all our support to Michelle as she begins the road to recovery."
Agyemang was playing her second season on loan at Brighton, having scored one goal in her five WSL appearances so far this season.
She played just 13 minutes of England's 3-0 win over Australia on Tuesday, off the bench, before going down with an off-the-ball knee injury.
