Netflix viewers will be pleased to learn that the sequel to a brand new horror movie is now streaming on the platform. Fans have described the film as "tense" and "everything a zombie film should be". 28 Weeks Later was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and stars Jeremy Renner, Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Imogen Poots, Mackintosh Muggleton, Harold Perrineau and Idris Elba among others.
The film's synopsis reads: "Six months after the original epidemic, the rage virus has all but annihilated the population of the British Isles. Nevertheless the U.S. Army declares the danger past, and American soldiers arrive to restore order and begin reconstruction. Refugees return to British soil, but one of them carries a deadly secret: The virus is not gone and is even more dangerous than before."
The film does not have as high a rating on Rotten Tomatoes as its successor 28 Years Later but it still scores a respectable 73% from the critics. Their consensus reads: "While 28 Weeks Later lacks the humanism that made 28 Days Later a classic, it's made up with fantastic atmosphere and punchy direction."
One critic said: "It's an exciting, well-directed thriller that, while providing more than enough action and gore to satisfy genre fans, also offers the political commentary that has characterized zombie movies."
"Relentlessly grim and grisly, 28 Weeks Later is not for the faint of heart. But its provocative post-apocalyptic theme makes for a smart and deeply unsettling film," another added.
An audience user said: "Everything a zombie film should be. Sinister and cutthroat intensity that builds frightening chaos. Fast cut editing and a great score with emotional layers. The writing fills out the franchise in exciting ways with insane action."
One reviewer described the film as "tense" with another billing it as a "masterpiece".
A reviewer added: "With the franchise now in the hands of other cinema professionals, 28 Weeks Later does an incredible job of replicating Danny Boyle's directorial style, as well as Alex Garland's Britain of horrors. Everything, including filming setbacks, such as the original's shaky hand cam recordings and experimenting with color and quality, have been reproduced."
28 Weeks Later is now streaming on Netflix.
