Netflix subscribers are only just rediscovering a forgotten treasure that boasts a flawless Rotten Tomatoes score.
The Playlist is a limited series described as a docudrama and tells a fictionalised story of the founding of music streaming company Spotify. It was influenced by the book Spotify Untold.
Spanning six episodes, The Playlist centres around the young Swedish tech entrepreneur, Daniel Ek, and his key partners who transformed an entire industry by providing free and legal streamed music globally.
According to the synopsis, it chronicles how unwavering beliefs, relentless determination, opportunity and ambitious dreams can enable smaller players to disrupt the established order by revolutionising how we all experience music.
Whilst it debuted on the streaming platform back in 2022, it appears numerous Netflix users have overlooked its presence.
This seems peculiar given it commands a perfect 100% rating on website Rotten Tomatoes, reports the Mirror.
One reviewer declared that the series even establishes fresh benchmarks for its category. They remarked: "The Playlist is near perfect. The mini-series sets the bar high for all biographical dramas to come after it. Particularly because it captures the ills of the tech industry, the joy, the fallout, and the many many people that all go into one success..." Another critic, penning their thoughts for The Guardian, appeared to hint it's worth marathoning purely for the finale.
They wrote: "One thing I won't spoil is how the series ends. This is because it is incredibly, brain-breakingly weird, and anyone who sits through all six hours of The Playlist deserves to feel the same jolting discomfort that I did. ".
Meanwhile, a separate review, bestowing five stars, proclaimed that the series "has no right to be this good."
Before continuing: "The Playlist is 2022's best drama. The scripts are sharp, pacey, funny and cleverly structured to provide each key player in the story with a voice. The performances are great without straying into bluster or scenery chewing, and there's a constant motion in the narrative that keeps you utterly captivated. Do not skip this one."
Viewers who have discovered it within their Netflix catalogues also praise it enormously.
Numerous fans suggest that it's a limited series that can be devoured in just one sitting.
One person, expressing their opinion online, wrote: "Riveting enough to be a definite binge watch."
Another concurred: "Really great series. Enjoyed it and binge watched it in one evening. I also like the idea of how they built the episodes logically to make the whole story."
Echoing a similar sentiment, someone else remarked: "The way they showed how the journey of each individual played into the plot was very impressive. A 10/10 absolute binge worthy."
Another individual expressed: "Highly gripping and inspiring. True reflection of today's startup culture. Loved it!"
The Playlist is streaming on Netflix.
