Newcastle suffered another disappointing defeat at the Amex Stadium, continuing their dreadful run of form at the venue. Despite having fresh players available, manager Eddie Howe chose to start Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, and Bruno Guimaraes, all of whom had recently returned from international duty.
The Magpies failed to register a single shot on target in the first half, with the service to towering striker Nick Woltemade leaving much to be desired. After squandering a promising opportunity created for Bruno, it seemed inevitable when Brighton broke the deadlock.
Danny Welbeck's opening goal was a poor one to concede from a team perspective, as Woltemade failed to apply any pressure on Lewis Dunk before the ball was played through midfield. Georginio Rutter's pass then split Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman, allowing the former England forward to delicately lift the ball over goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Despite Woltemade's clever back-heel equaliser with just 14 minutes remaining, Newcastle conceded a second goal when Welbeck was left unmarked to slot home the winner.
Here's how the Toon Army performed on the South Coast...
Nick Pope: 7
Made some crucial saves to keep Newcastle in the game.
Kieran Trippier: 7
Kept the play flowing and played a part in the equalising goal.
Malick Thiaw: 6
Made some key interventions but was caught out for both goals.
Sven Botman: 5
Looked on as Welbeck netted twice. Off the pace.
Dan Burn: 7
Stepped up and appeared to be the strongest of the international stars on display.
Joelinton: 6
Despite looking fatigued, his body clock was likely indicating it was nearing midnight.
Sandro Tonali 6
Managed to make 55 touches despite running on fumes.
Bruno Guimaraes 7
Remained on the pitch after a lacklustre first half. Played a significant role in the equaliser but then lost focus for Welbeck's winning goal.
Anthony Gordon 7
Gave his all. Created some threatening moments before taking a breather.
Anthony Elanga 5
A rather dismal performance, truth be told. Just 20 touches and one poorly executed cross.
Appears to be lacking confidence.
Nick Woltemade 8
A disappointing first half, but came into his own when the service improved. Making a mockery of his £69m fee.
Substitutes
Lewis Miley 7 (for Joelinton 46)
Made a noticeable impact with an assist.
Jacob Murphy 6 (for Elanga 46)
Caused issues but sent two opportunities soaring high and wide.
Harvey Barnes 6 (for Gordon 69)
Failed to create enough trouble.
Jacob Ramsey 6 (for Tonali 69)
Returning from injury and not considered fit enough to start.
