Poundland is set to close six stores today, delivering a blow to bargain hunters across the UK as the discount retailer continues its major restructuring plan.

The stores shutting their doors for good today are located in Havant, Newport, Ripley, Swanley, Uttoxeter, and Partick. Meanwhile, the chain has confirmed that two additional outlets will close later this year: Market Harborough on October 9 and Carlisle on November 9. These closures form part of a wider shake-up in which 67 stores will be axed, a move designed to save the struggling high-street giant.

The restructuring plan, approved by the High Court in August, came just days before Poundland faced the threat of collapse. At the start of the process, Poundland operated around 800 stores, but the retailer now expects to retain between 650 and 700 outlets.

The chain, which employs 14,700 staff, has faced mounting financial pressures in recent years. Its new owner, Gordon Brothers, purchased the company for £1 in June and pledged to invest £90million to rescue the business. The plan involves closing 68 stores, cutting around 1,000 jobs, and shutting two warehouses, affecting 350 workers. It also includes rent reductions at up to 180 locations and the closure of Poundland's frozen food operation and website.

However, not all planned closures will go ahead. Earlier this week, the retailer announced that 11 stores originally earmarked for closure will remain open, including locations in Irvine, Brighton, Anniesland and Whitby. Seven further planned closures at unspecified sites have also been cancelled.

The chain has already removed its Poundland Perks loyalty scheme, with customers able to redeem reward vouchers until January 15, 2026. Its Darton frozen and digital distribution centre will close later this year, followed by the Bilston national distribution centre in early 2026.

As part of the restructure, Poundland has also launched clearance sales of up to 90% off in several stores and is refocusing on its core £1 offer. The retailer has rolled out £1, £2, and £3 grocery pricing across all stores, with 60% of grocery items now priced at £1, 20% at £2, and 20% at £3, aiming to win back customers through value.

The closures mark a significant moment for the UK discount sector, as Poundland works to stabilise operations and secure its long-term future.
