Rachel Reeves is plotting to clobber millions with brutal tax raid, senior Tory warns

Today's speech is Rachel Reeves' attempt to distract from the chaos of the last few weeks. But it's too late. We have already seen this Labour government for what it is - incompetent and clueless. The Chancellor simply has no idea how to run an economy.

Labour came in promising 'growth, growth, growth', but with each passing day, the grind of government shows how poorly equipped Rachel Reeves is to deliver that growth. The only growth she seems capable of delivering is in your bills, your taxes and government borrowing.

A well run government should be looking to make life easier for working people and businesses. But at the weekend, the mask slipped.

Having hiked taxes to record levels, Labour confessed they were looking at clobbering aspirational, middle classes with their next inevitable tax raid. That is the worst thing they could possibly do to drive growth.

The people who want to get on and get up are the backbone of this country. They are the ones the government should be looking out for. Instead, they are taxing the living daylights out of them.

We can't just keep increasing taxes. But that is what Labour seems determined to do. It's the same old Labour, their thirst for taking other peoples' money cannot ever be quenched.

Record taxes are already making life too hard for people. Businesses are closing, there are few new jobs - even the Governor of the Bank of England says people are being laid off at a rate of knots - and we are borrowing more than ever.

Labour has taken a wrecking ball to the economy, and they are making life increasingly difficult for people up and down the country.

Rachel Reeves will no doubt claim today that her plan is working - that she is on the side of working people and that she will help people get on the property ladder. But all she is doing is giving with one hand whilst her Labour colleagues take with the other.

If Keir Starmer continues to roll out the red carpet for migrants, British people will not see the benefit of increased homeownership. An ever-increasing number will go to foreigners and their families.

What Britain needs is a proper economic plan for people looking to get on with their lives. Britain needs to be a place that helps people who want to contribute.

The last thing we need is a Chancellor who seeks to take your hard-earned cash every chance she gets.

What we need is a serious economic plan - one that supports ambition, restores confidence, and builds a country where those who work hard and play by the rules are supported, not penalised.

That's what the Conservatives stands for - and it's what we will keep fighting for in the months and years ahead. A fairer, more ambitious, more dynamic Britain - one that backs hardworking people.
