Rachel Reeves is scraping the barrel with her latest bonkers tax idea

You know a government has run out of road when its big idea to save the country from its financial woes is a taxi tax! And that's precisely where Rachel from Accounts and her high tax treasury officials have landed. They now want to impose VAT on all taxi journeys - which will prove to be about as successful at finding money for the Exchequer as sticking your hand down the back of the sofa hoping to find next month's rent.

'Desperate' doesn't even begin to describe the financial predicament this Labour government has got the country into. Reeves currently needs an extra £50billion by November to make her sums add up and things seem to be getting worse by the day.

Figures out last week showed capital gains tax, inheritance tax and self-employed income tax receipts in August were all down (despite higher tax rates on all of them) which in turn has pushed government borrowing up to £18billion in just one month - significantly higher than anyone anticipated. So her 'Taxi Tax' - intended to raise £750million a year - won't even touch the sides.

Starmer must end EU love affair

Trump's State visit last week provided many of the solutions to the UK's current problems, but, Starmer would have to end his love affair with the EU, pivot towards the US and make the most of the UK's hard won Brexit freedoms - without which there would have been no US trade deal last week.

In order to take advantage of the hoped for £150billion trade deal in AI, quantum computing and nuclear power - and to capture the inward investment that accompanied it of £22billion from Microsoft and the £5billion from Google - Starmer has to stop his new regulatory deal with the EU. If he realigns with the EU then the UK will have given up its chance offered by Trump to lead the world with the US on AI. The two regulatory regimes are completely incompatible.

Trump's parting advice at the joint press conference with Starmer was to get energy prices down as he had done in the US, allowing inflation to fall too. As Trump rightly said, the UK needs to take advantage of its natural resources and "drill baby drill", not rely on useless, sporadic wind power. In response Starmer squirmed which tells you all you need to know.

The US state visit and trade deal could have been the economic shot in the arm the UK desperately needs. Unfortunately it will be squandered.

No doubt Starmer - who gets everything wrong - will continue with his backdoor deal to get us back into the declining EU. Mad Ed Miliband will continue with his self sabotage of net zero zealotry keeping UK industrial energy prices four times those in America, and Reeves will carry on trying to tax her way to growth and spend her way out of debt.

The only people I want to see bundled into a Taxi is Starmer and his second-rate Cabinet, and I would happily pay the VAT for that!

'Shameful' Palestine decision

Keir Starmer's decision to recognise the state of Palestine is utterly shameful.

Everyone knows - including Starmer himself - that this has nothing to do with what is right and wrong, and nothing to do with peace in the Middle East.

It's all to do with the fact that Labour has been haemorrhaging votes amongst Muslims and Sir Flip Flop's desperation to win them back. As Sir Richard Dearlove - former head of MI6 said - this is a reward for Hamas, a terrorist organisation, who now have a clear victory to show for their disgusting attack on Israel. To reward terrorists for party political calculation is beneath contempt.

image Ed 'Buffoon' Davey

The Lib Dem leader is a buffoon and utter embarrassment. His latest kindergarten stunt is banging a drum at the head of a marching band to open his Party conference looking cock-a-hoop with himself with shirt buttons straining to keep in his stomach.

Do the Lib Dems really think that their political success recently has been down to their leader doing childish stunts? They have done well due to the unpopularity of the two main parties - not because Ed Davey is an utter berk.

Davey should put forward some serious political ideas rather than acting as if he is auditioning for children's TV.

Met Office's bumper pay packets

A local farmer told me he has been forced to pay for several weather forecasts because the publicly owned Met Office forecasts are so inaccurate - which can have catastrophic consequences for farmers.

So you can imagine how surprised I was to discover the Met Office staff were given record bonuses of £8.1million last year. Apparently, this was made possible because Met Office bosses scrapped the direct link between forecast accuracy and bonuses.

It seems Met Office staff are far better at forecasting their bumper pay packets than they are the weather. These bonuses should be repaid.

PC diversity quota must be abandoned

How much damage does the politically correct Equality Diversity and Inclusion social engineering have to cause before it is abandoned?

The push for female and ethnic minority frontline army officers reduced numbers applying for our armed forces; the drive for female fighter pilots reduced the quality and now both Oxford and Cambridge Universities have dropped out of the top three university ranking for the first time ever because of these misguided attempts at putting woke outcomes ahead of merit.

Surely, it's time to stop these acts of self-sabotage by the self-righteous?

Angelina Jolie should stick to acting

Why is it Hollywood actors always feel the need to shove their left-wing political views down our throats?

Prime example is Angelina Jolie - whose dad, Jon Voight, is a Trump-supporting Republican - who never misses an opportunity to jump on some lefty bandwagon.

She may be a good actress and she is undoubtedly beautiful - but her political views are no more valid than anyone less famous. Is it too much to ask her to stick to the acting?
