Return to Paradise star Anna Samson has confessed feeling "overwhelmed" after securing her new role and hinted at a potential Death in Paradise crossover. The actress, 35, became a household name after portraying DI Mackenzie Clarke in the popular BBC spin-off show, marking the first time a female lead has been cast in the Death in Paradise universe.
This significant role evidently came with its own set of pressures. During an appearance on Monday's (October 13) episode of The One Show, alongside hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp as well as co-star Lloyd Griffith, known for his role as Senior Constable Colin Cartwright, she discussed her experiences. Alex Jones likened the Paradise franchise to the Marvel Universe before asking Anna about her feelings on being the first female detective lead, joining the ranks of actors like Chris Marshall and Ben Miller.
Anna confessed: "Series one, that was quite overwhelming, I'm not going to lie. To join a legacy of actors and detectives that people love."
She added: "There is this amazing moment when the phone call comes in and you get the job. At first you're thrilled and relieved for maybe 24 hours and then you realise you have to do it and you actually have to live up to something but then as time has gone on I am very proud and very excited to join them all."
The actress also hinted at a possible collaboration with her fellow Paradise detectives, despite never having crossed paths before, reports Manchester Evening News.
She said: "I would like to meet them because it's a very unique thing being that central detective role and I've never met them, so I'm on this campaign to put that out there."
Fellow guest David Harewood chimed in: "You could do a Marvel Universe thing, where everyone goes back in time and is sucked into a universe together." Anna was enthusiastic about the suggestion as she responded: "Yes, I would love that."
The room erupted with laughter as Lloyd quipped: "Imagine all the crimes."
The beloved Australian offshoot of detective drama Death in Paradise is making its way back to our television screens for a second series, with filming currently taking place in Australia.
The six-episode series follows Detective Sergeant Mackenzie Clarke as she continues investigating "perplexing cases" in her hometown of Dolphin Cove - whilst navigating the series-one finale revelation that her former fiance Glenn (Tai Hara) remains romantically interested in her.
In addition to the returning cast, audiences can anticipate a lineup of thrilling guest stars, including legendary Australian vocalist Tim Rogers.
Return to Paradise is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Season 2 is coming soon.
