A once-in-a-lifetime train journey that connects the stunning Welsh seaside town of Aberystwyth to the historic yet incredible sights of Devil's Bridge captures the wonder of all who get on board. No, it might not serve tasty caviar like more lavish alternatives, but the Vale of Rheidol Railway - once touted as one of the best tourist destinations in the world - is an unforgettable 12-mile long journey through the Welsh countryside.
During the nearly three-hour adventure aboard a narrow-gauge steam train, wide open fields, ancient woodland and rugged mountain scenery can be seen dashing past your window through all of the adventure's twists and turns. After clinging to the sun-embossed hillside, the iconic coach reaches the home of the famous Mynach Falls and Devil's Punchbowl. Just make sure to keep your eye out for any interesting creatures, as the route is renowned for its opportunity to spot birds of prey like red kites and buzzards that soar high above the valley.
Opened a whole century ago back in 1902, Visit Wales describes it as a "masterpiece of engineering" that has been "delighting passengers young and old for generations".
Long gone are its days of carrying lead ore from the Welsh mines, instead it now acts as a moving piece for holidaymakers and thrill-seekers.
Plus, if you're not the biggest fan of big crowds, you can go all out and hire the whole train for yourself. Charter your own private excursion along with friends and families, creating a truly memorable experience that will never be etched from your mind.
The Vale of Rheidol Railway is more than just a train journey, however. It also boasts The Railway Shop, located at Aberystwyth Station, which sells a range of railway books, gifts and keepsakes that you can keep as a memento for your special day.
If you ever get peckish, it also has a cafe that sells hot and cold drinks, as well as snacks and ice cream.
One Tripadvisor reviewer said: "Wonderful railway trip, the station at Aberystwyth is immaculate, the shop has a vast selection of railway books and beautiful gifts.
"The staff were very friendly, welcoming and accommodating to everyone's needs. The trip itself is stunning, very much worth a visit."
Another added: " Excellent dog friendly experience. The engine shed was brilliant. The journey was great with excellent views of Cwm Rheidol and the mountains."
Positive reviews didn't end there either, as someone gleamed how amazing the journey is no matter the weather: "Easy to book online. We didn't have great weather, but it didn't spoil our journey, it's a very relaxing few hours, with scenic views."
