Spain remains one of the most popular European destinations for tourists, attracting millions of holiday makers from around the world every year. Last year saw a record 94 million travellers arriving in the country, among them almost 18 million Brits.
Foreigners are undoubtedly attracted by Spain's combination of stunning beaches, breathtaking scenery and fascinating historic cities. Some of the best-loved places still include Barcelona and Madrid, as well as coastal resorts on the famous Costa del Sol. The Canaries and Balearics also attract a huge number of holidaymakers, with their golden sandy beaches and lively nightlife.
One city that can often be overlooked but has plenty to offer and makes a great place to spend a few days is Cadiz in Andalusia.
The ancient port city was founded 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians and is the oldest city in Western Europe. The home of the Spanish Navy, the port boomed in the 16th-century as a base for exploration and trade.
It has more than 100 watchtowers, including the iconic Torre Tavira, which was traditionally used for spotting ships. On the waterfront is the domed, 18th-century Cádiz Cathedral, featuring baroque and neoclassical elements.
The city can be divided into two - on the one side are wide avenues, beaches, sailing clubs and modern sporting facilities.
On the other the traveller can find historic Cadiz with its charming old districts brimming with character and which include the old medieval town "El Pópulo", the fishing district "La Viña" and the living temple to flamenco "Santa María".

Another reason to visit is the fact that the city offers the best value for money for travellers, according to a survey carried out by a language school called Learn Spanish with James.
The survey ranked Cadiz top for offering exceptional affordability across accommodation, food and entertainment.
The ancient city is certainly a big hit with travellers on TripAdvisor, gaining rave reviews.
One US tourist going by the name TexasCatBird wrote: "The city is walkable, friendly, brimming with character, full of shops, cafes, clean alleyways with cobblestone or stone streets, churches, lovely parks with massive trees, ocean views along the outer streets, fountains and restaurants.
"We visited a few markets which exhibited beautiful produce and vegetables, meats, cheese, dried fish, and even flowers. Savour this lovely city."
