The pretty little town with the 'UK's best fish and chips shop'

A charming market town in County Durham is home to the UK's best fish and chips shop. Yarm Road Fish and Chips at 366 Yarm Road in Darlington has triumphed at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2025, securing the coveted title of Takeaway of the Year. With over 20 years of experience in the fish and chip industry, the team at Yarm Road Fish and Chips has perfected the art of classic British takeaway food. They are known for serving their legendary crispy batter as well as homemade fish cakes and a wide array of tempting meals.

The awards placed Yarm Road Fish and Chips at the top of the list, followed by The Fish Works in Largs in second place and Kellaway's Fish and Chips in Cornwall in third. Darlington is a historic market town located on the banks of the River Skerne, 13 miles west of Middlesbrough and 17 miles south of Durham.

Darlington gained national and international recognition as the birthplace of the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR), the world's first steam-powered passenger railway.

Today, the town centre is home to a vibrant mix of independent businesses and was named one of the top independent high streets in the UK in 2023.
